Don’t let the fear of flying keep you grounded

Does the thought of stepping onto an airplane make you break out in a sweat? Do these thoughts cause your heart start to beat faster and your legs to become weak?

Did you know that it is estimated that 40 percent of the population have a fear of flying or suffer some degree of anxiety about getting into a flying machine?  If you’re one of those people that have a severe a fear of flying and experience symptoms like rapid heartbeat, sweating, rapid breathing, and nausea, it’s time to take action.

Here are some tips that can help you overcome your fear of flying or at least minimize its effects:

1. Sit as Close to the Front of the Cabin as Possible

Even for seasoned travelers, experiencing turbulence can be terrifying. Sitting at the front of the airplane reduces the effects of the turbulence and minimize the bumping and shaking. This can help make your flight much better.

2. Bring Distractions

You can reduce your fear of flying by doing something that keeps your mind off of the idea that you are flying. By doing something that distracts you, you won’t be dwelling on all the possible things that could happen during the flight.

• You can read a book, watch the in-flight movie, do a crossword puzzle, listen to music, or anything else you can think of to distract yourself.

3. Stay Away from Caffeine

Drinking anything that contains caffeine before or during a flight like coffee, soda, or energy drinks, can put your nerves on edge. Since caffeine is a stimulant it can make your body feel jittery and actually worsen your anxiety when flying.

• While alcohol can be calming, if you elect to have an alcoholic beverage to help calm your nerves, avoid overdoing it.

4. Practice Belly Breathing

Deep or belly breathing can help you relax. By breathing slowly and deeply into your diaphragm you are enabling your parasympathetic nervous system which is designed to calm you down.

• Try this if you’re on a flight and you start to feel anxious. Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts (1 -2 – 3 – 4), hold it for 3 counts (1 -2 – 3) and then out through your mouth for 5 counts (1 -2 – 3 – 4 -5). This process helps to lower your heart rate and reduces your anxiety.

5. Educate Yourself about Air Travel Statistics

Did you know that your odds of being killed on a single airline flight on any of the 78 major world airlines are only 1 in 4.7 million? This means you almost have a better chance of winning the lottery than getting killed on a flight with any of the major airlines.

• Flying in an airplane is the safest form of transportation. Your chances of dying in an automobile accident are 1 in 5,000. It’s much more dangerous to drive to the airport than it is to travel by plane.

• This and other statistics may calm your fears. Since a lot of fears come from the unknown, educating yourself about air travel statistics can help eliminate some of your fear.

• Remember, airplanes are designed with many redundant features that can withstand a lot more stress than actually occurs in a normal flight.

6. Desensitize Yourself

The way many people get over fears is by facing them head on. You can get past your fears by putting yourself in that type of situation and finding a way to get through it.

• When flight attendants go through their training they learn about how to deal with hijackers, cabin decompression, and plane crashes. This exposure helps to desensitize them and makes them less afraid.

• There is a therapy, known as exposure therapy, where people who are afraid of flying are put into a realistic simulator and then the therapist tries to scare them on purpose. This helps to desensitize them and helps them learn how to cope better with a real life flight.

7. Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming Techniques

One of the best uses for hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming Techniques is helping people get over their fears.

• Almost all fears are learned.  What you’ve learned you can unlearn. Using these powerful tools, a person can use the amazing power of their minds to unlearn their fear of flying.

You Can Overcome Your Fear of Flying

The fear of flying can paralyze you and hold you back. While you might have a fear of flying you may also need to fly for business or in a family emergency. Try using these 7 tips to lessen you fear of flying. You fear of flying doesn’t have to ground you anymore.
