Reaching Your Goals When Times Are Tough

I have many clients who come to me because they’re having difficulty reaching their goals.  They come to my San Diego office because they’ve heard that hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) can be very helpful for people who want to shift the way they approach their situation and get another result.

That’s because a little shift in your thinking can dramatically change your results.

While I highly recommend people using hypnotherapy and NLP to facilitate these shifts, there are also some methods you can use to think about your problem differently and, as a result, get a different result. That’s what we’re going to talk about today.

Keys to Success

The thing about obstacles is they can really test your mettle. The problem is most people fail this test. In fact, the reason most people never succeed at anything in life is they give up at the first roadblock.

I think Wesley Woo hit the nail on the head when he said, “To succeed you must first improve, to improve you must first practice, to practice you must first learn, and to learn you must first fail.”

Wesley was talking about is success is having the courage to overcome failure It’s by overcoming the obstacles that life puts in front of you that you grow into the person you were meant to be.

So let me ask, when you encounter those inevitable bumps in the road, what do you do? Do you look for solutions that will help you deal effectively with these challenges or do you go to pieces?

Here are 7 tips you can use for reaching your goals no matter the adversity:  

1. Don’t React – Reflect

The reason many people don’t succeed is they react to their situation without taking the time to think. Reaching your goals involves taking the time to think about your issue differently.

When an obstacle blocks your way, take some time to ponder your present quandary. Often what seems most obvious is not your real issue.

Another problem is sometimes we make mountains out of mole-hills. By taking the time to reflect you can step back and get the proper perspective on what’s presently troubling you.

2. Ask Yourself “What’s the Worst that Can Happen?”

A problem many people experience when obstacles appear is something psychologist call catastrophizing. Catastrophizing simply is when you believe that something is far worse than it actually is.

An easy way to overcome catastrophizing is to acknowledge your fears and then taking a step back to examine them rationally. The simplest way to do this is to ask, “What’s the worst thing that can happen?” Then ask yourself “Could I live with this?”

For example, let’s say you had a disagreement with your boss about a project at work and you accidently showed him up in a big meeting with your other team members.

You might catastrophize and use negative self talk like, “I really blew it this time”. This type of self talk can get your mind spinning out of control as you hallucinate (imagine) all the negative things that might happen.

You can stop this out of control self talk by asking “What’s the worst thing that can happen?”

The answer might be, “I’ll get fired.”

Then ask yourself, “Could I live with this?”

Well of course, you’d just have to look for another job, maybe with a boss you liked more.

Finally ask yourself, “Do you really think this will happen?”

The answer is, unless you showed your boss up by running naked and drunk through your office and flipping him off, the answer is probably “no”.

Then ask yourself, “Well, what might actually happen?”

The answer might be, “My boss will be upset with me and I might get overlooked for my next promotion.” This is probably a much more realistic scenario.

Don’t try to ignore your fears. Ignoring them will only serve to thwart you from confronting the issue. Acknowledge them using this process and then move on.

3. Come Up With Alternatives

When faced with adversity you can develop tunnel vision and only see your situation from one perspective. A better idea is to think about your options and then write them down.

Writing down your options can help you see the situation from many angles. A method many people use is brainstorming.            Brainstorm as many solutions as you can and then write them down. This can help you uncover options you would have otherwise have overlooked.

The key here is to be open-minded. This will prevent you from automatically screening out possible solutions that can lead to reaching your goal.

4. It’s Not a Problem

What comes to mind when you hear the word problem? Well most people think of a problem as something difficult to accomplish.

Instead you can approach the challenge with positivity and think of it as a puzzle. Puzzles aren’t difficult, they’re fun.

While it might sound over-simplified you can either approach an obstacle as a stumbling block, thinking, “I don’t think I can figure out this problem” or “I’m going to do my best to solve this puzzle.”

By taking a positive approach you’ll move forward in the direction of reaching your goals.

5. Keep Focused on the Present

You can’t change the past and you can’t live in the future. You live only in the present.

The only way to affect your present is to focus on what’s going on in this moment.

Reaching your goals means concentrating your energy on what you can do in the here and now.

6. Get Support from People Close to You

In times of trouble it’s easier to navigate through life when you feel you have the love and support of the ones you love. Facing tough times can be a lot easier with a little help from your friends and family members.

While asking for help can be difficult, look at it this way, involving your loved ones will help you feel better and will give your loved ones an opportunity to support you. Everybody wins.

As Dinah Shore once said, “Trouble is part of your life. If you don’t share it, you don’t give the person who loves you a chance to love you enough.”

Make a point to accept the loving and supportive care that your loved ones are so willing to provide. I can almost guarantee you’ll have a chance to reciprocate in the future.

7. Find A Way to Relax

It’s very difficult to concentrate on solving your issues when you’re overly stressed out. Make it a point to find out what calms you down, makes you feel peace, and brings you simple joy.

Some activities to consider are taking a walk in the woods, swimming a few laps at the pool, doing a hand craft or participating in a hobby. All of these can help to sooth you when you’re experiencing a tricky life phase.

By participating in soothing activities not only will you be able to relax, you’ll be able to come back energized and ready to solve your puzzle.
