Using Habits for Successfully Setting and Achieving Goals

setting and achieving goals“There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something.”Henry Ford

As America’s #1 Mental Fitness Coach© and the founder of Total Mind Therapy© I often have clients come into my San Diego office that want to use hypnosis and NLP for setting and achieving goals. The reason they come is that hypnotherapy and NLP can help people create the habits they need in order to get the results the want.

One of the Habits of Highly Successful People

If you examine the habits of highly successful people you’ll find that their habits directly support the goals they have set for themselves. They know that in order to reach any goal you have to have habits in place that support that goal.

They also know that if your current habits are counter-productive to your goal’s achievement, you’ll need to change them or run the risk of coming up short.

How Do Habits Help You Reach Your Goals?

As a master instructor of Tang Soo Do (Karate) I’d like to use an example that is very near and dear to me.  Suppose you have the goal of becoming a black belt.

After finding an appropriate place to train you’ll need to adopt the habit of regularly attending classes. If you don’t adopt this habit it will be impossible to receive the instruction necessary to achieve your goal.

Next you need to adopt the habit of training regularly on your own. This will allow you to hone your skills while building your muscular strength and endurance.

Combing the habits of training in a formal setting and practicing what you learn on your own will almost invariably bring your goal of becoming a black belt to fruition.

Identify the Habits You Need

The first thing you need to do before you decide to adopt new, positive habits is to decide which habits will help you attain your goals. As Tony Robbins once said, “Success leaves clues.”

In setting and achieving almost any goal there are habits you can adopt that can practically guarantee success. Think about your goals and decide on what actions you can take to help bring them about.

3 Keys for develop Habits that Support Setting and Achieving Goals

1. Find Daily Habits to Practice

Habits you practice daily are much easier to put into place and keep than those that you use less frequently.

2. Use the KISS Method

As the saying goes, “Keep it simple Sherlock”. What you’ll find is the more complex the task, the less likely you are to stick with it. If you really have to implement a complex habit break it down into smaller, more achievable pieces.

Start with a simpler version and then add more complexity later.

3. Make Your Goals Specific

You have to do more than just specify what you’re going to do. You need to specify how you’re going to complete your goal. Going back to the example of becoming a black belt, to say “I’m going to work out and get my black belt” is inadequate.

You need to include the how, where, when, and why as well.

First the how, “To receive my black belt I am practicing martial arts 5 days a week.”

Now add the where “I’m going to attend class 3 days a week and train on my own at home 2 days a week.”

Next decide when you’ll achieve your goal. This is because a goal without a deadline is just a dream. “By following my training schedule I will achieve my goal of black belt by January 31 2015.”

Finally add the why. “I am getting my black belt so that I can remain fit and strong and feel good about myself.”

Prepare for Obstacles

There will always be obstacles when you begin to create new habits. If possible, try to figure out these out ahead of time. This way you can address them before they begin.

For example, if you’ve decided that you’re going to eat a healthy breakfast every day. An obstacle might be the junk food you have laying around. Get rid of the obstacle by getting rid of all the breakfast junk food in your pantry and freezer.

Sometimes the obstacle can be time interference.

Maybe your partner is worried that your training to become a black belt will interfere with your relationship. You can reassure your partner by scheduling time with them or better yet have them join you in your training!

Use Your Habits Help You to Achieve Your Goals Automatically

Once your actions become habits you’ll no longer have to decide on what to do. You’ll begin taking the action necessary for goal achievement without even thinking about it.

Don’t let counter-productive habits hold you back from success. Instead, start planning and practicing the supportive habits you need to automatically move you toward your goal’s achievement.

Habits will make setting and achieving goals so much easier. Choose the habits that best support your goals, put them into action every day and enjoy your new success!
