Start Your Day Right with a Positive Morning Routine

Many clients come to my San Diego office want to use hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic programming (NLP) to help them focus and get more done. As a master NLP practitioner and clinical hypnotherapist I know the value of these therapies for helping a person focus and get more done. After just a few hypnotherapy sessions clients often tell me that the quality of their work has improved because they are thinking and concentrating at a whole new level, like they never have before.

While these therapies are very helpful in improving concentration and focus, these gains are often temporary unless you reinforce them. One of the simplest ways to do this is by establishing a positive morning routine that energizes you while gently stimulating your mind.

A positive morning routine can help you focus on what you want to accomplish that day and actually help you get more done.

What Does Your Morning Look Like?

You already have a morning routine; it just may not be empowering you. If you’re like most people, your morning probably goes something like this:

1. Your alarm interrupts your sleep.

2. You hit the snooze button so you can sleep “just 5 more minutes” at least 3 times.

3. You lie in bed and think about how much you’d like to stay in be all day or think about how much you dislike your job.

4. You rush to the shower to wake up, dry off.

5. You check your closet, grab the first thing you see and get dressed.

6. Finally you run out the door with a granola bar and a cup of coffee.

How can you expect to have a great day when that’s your morning routine?

Is it Time to Change Your Morning Routine?

If you have a morning routine like the one above it can negatively impact your entire day and your entire life. A better plan would be to have a well thought out morning routine designed calm and stimulate your mind.

Imagine how different your life would be if you had a morning routine that did that instead!

Designing a Postive Morning Routine

If you want to have a good day every day you need to establish a morning routine that stimulates and tones your mind the same way physical exercises stimulate and tone your body.

Here are some ideas that can help you establish a positive morning routine:

1. Wake up 30 Minutes Earlier

A morning routine has to be just that – a routine. If you stay in bed as long as you can it’s a routine, just not a positive one.

I already know what you’re thinking. “I already can’t get out of bed in the morning. How do you expect me to get up 30 minutes earlier?”

The best way to do this is to go to stop doing whatever you’re doing and get ready for bed earlier. This will give you the extra rest you’ll NEED for the extra time to accommodate the positive, constructive changes of your new morning routine.

2. When You Wake up Get up  

The moment the alarm sounds is called the Heroic Moment. In order to be this kind of hero you need to get out of bed.

Don’t lie there letting your mind think negative thoughts about your day, your life, your job, your challenges, or anything else. Overcome these thoughts by getting out of bed immediately.  Once you’re up and running it’s a lot harder to think negative thoughts.

3. Drink at Least One Glass of Water

After 6 to 8 hours of sleep you’re going to be thirsty. Drink at least one big glass of water, preferably two. You can also leave a bottle of water on the bathroom counter if that makes it more convenient.

What’s important is to be sure to get your water – you’ll feel 10 times better in 10 minutes.

4. Have a Morning Exercise Routine

A part of your morning routine needs to be an exercise program that gets your energy level up.

Jump start your day by taking a walk, jumping rope, doing a yoga routine or practicing Qigong or Tai Chi . Choose whatever exercise you want, but do something. The key is to get your body moving while focusing on positive thoughts.

5. Engage in Mental Exercises

Set aside 10 minutes to meditate, pray or read and inspiring book or article. These types of mental exercises will positively stimulate you and get your ready for the day.

6. Read Your Goals to Yourself – Out Loud

In order to achieve anything in life you need to make your goals a priority.

Part of your morning routine needs to be a review of your goals. This will help focus both your conscious and subconscious mind on the goals you want to accomplish and greatly improve the likelihood you’ll achieve them.

7. Say Your Positive Affirmations to Yourself Out Loud in the Shower.

Positive affirmations are just sayings that help you build your self confidence and self esteem.

One of my favorites comes from Brian Tracy, “I like myself, I like myself” 

I realize it sounds silly, but you’re not doing anything intellectually stimulating in the shower anyway and it helps focus your mind on the positive. Use positive affirmations while showering to tell yourself how great you are and how wonderful your life is.

8. Eat a Healthy Breakfast

Your mother was right. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Not only does it give you the energy you need to start your day it also helps you control your hunger for the rest of the day.

For a quick breakfast have some yogurt and fruit or some oatmeal or other healthy cereal. What’s most important is to sit down and eat at least a small meal.

A way to make your breakfast even more powerful is to focus on your positive affirmations while slowly savoring your food.

9. Make it a Great Day!

Now that you’ve started your day with a positive morning routine how could you not be successful? If you run into issues use your positive affirmations to help you think positively for as long as possible.

You’ll find that you can make it a little longer each day.

Start Your Positive Morning Routine Today

If you do everything in this morning routine it may take 90 minutes or more. That might be too much for you, especially in the beginning.

If you don’t have this much time, come up with a shortened version, one that works for you. If you just want the essentials, drink your water, do a short exercise routine or meditate, pray or read, review your goals, practice using positive affirmations, and make time to slowly eat breakfast.

A well thought out morning routine will have a significant impact on your life, happiness, and success. It’s worth the investment.
