Recovering From Disappointment by Learning From Failure

Learning from Failure

Learning from Failure?

“It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.” ― Theodore Roosevelt

Failure is part of life. One thing consistent about life is that disappointment will be part of it.

While disappointment is part of life, you have a choice of what to do with it. You can let it crush your spirit and ruin your motivation or you can learn from it and grow.

Learning from Failure

“Life is full of screw-ups. You’re supposed to fail sometimes. It’s a required part of the human existence.”Sarah Dessen

The good news is learning from failure is not only possible, you can learn from disappointment and be in a much better place afterwards.

You can use this 3-step process to help you learn from failure:

1. You Can Learn from Every Setback

A Major Presuppositions of Neuro Linguistic Programming is we don’t fail. We try, and use the feedback we receive to improve.

When you experience failure try to identify the lesson you’ve learned.

Yes you probably will feel rotten for a little while. Force yourself to get over it and identify the lesson in your disappointment.

Take some time and reflect on the situation. Ask yourself, “What can I take away from this?”

Be honest with yourself and try to find the lesson.

• You may have to get someone else’s perspective. If you do, choose somebody you trust to get you honest feedback.  A neutral person can often help you see things that your emotions may be blocking. Be open to their point of view.

2. Be Okay With Your Emotions

When you’re experience a setback, especially a major one, it’s okay to be open to your emotions. The best way to get over the hurt of failure is to confront it.

• If you are a crier, cry for a while. It can help you release any negative energy that might be holding you back.

• Find someone you can talk to. Just talking can help begin the healing process. You aren’t looking for answers, just a friendly ear.

• You might try helping someone else. This can help you turn your own negative energy into something positive. Helping someone else can get your focus off your problems.

3. Remember Your Past Successes

Failure can distort how you look at life, focusing your thoughts on your disappointments.

Instead decide to focus on your past successes.

• Think about a time when you felt pride about something you did. This can help you remember what a star you are. Those memories can help you get out your rut. Looking back at your past success can help you feel motivated to persevere.

• Is there someone you shared a past success with, maybe at work or on a sports team? Call them up and talk about those experiences. Sometimes a friendly voice can help you ease the disappointment. This can bolster your self-confidence.

Making a Habit of Learning from Failure

No matter how great your setback, life goes on. If you focus on you’re the lessons learned your setback can help you on your trip to success.

So the next time you run into a failure, pick yourself up off the ground, dust yourself off, and get on with your life.

Look for anything you can to take away from your experience. The more you learn, the better equipped you become to handle future challenges which will send you further along the path to success.

By learning from failure you can live the life of your dreams.
