Most people allow life to take them along the path of least resistance which unfortunately is usually not the road to success.

There are simple methods you can use every day to put yourself into a more resourceful state. These methods will help you overcome negative thinking and emotions, giving you the power to bring about positive changes in your life.

Here are 7 simple methods you can use to take charge of your life:

1. Put Yourself First

If you are traveling with a child in an airplane and the oxygen masks suddenly fall from the overhead what are you supposed to do? You’re supposed to put the mask over your mouth and nose first then place the mask over your child’s. Why? It’s because unless you put the mask on yourself first you could pass out. Now both you and your child will suffer.

Put yourself first. Be assertive. Ask for what you need. Declare what you want. Learn to say ‘no’. While you don’t have to be selfish when you put yourself first you are helping you succeed which will help everyone succeed

2. Know What Makes You Powerful

Write out your 10 greatest strengths. How can these strengths help you? How can you leverage them to your advantage? Taking charge of your life means knowing how to use your strengths to accomplish your goals.

3. Know What Areas Need Work

Write out your 10 greatest weaknesses. By knowing your weaknesses you can begin to shore them up and get the help you need so they don’t get you into trouble. Ask, what you can do to reduce the impact of your weaknesses?

4. Focus on the Area of Your Life That Will Give You the Biggest Bang for Your Buck

If you focused on improving one area of your life, which one would give you the biggest impact? Figure out what that area would be and then go to work on it. By focusing on that area you’ll begin to make inroads into all the other areas of your life.

For example, if your finances aren’t where you’d like it to be what can you do to improve them? Do you need to get another, better paying job? Do you need to go to school in order to get that new better job? Decide which area of your life would have the greatest impact if improved and get to work.

5. Determine What You Have Allowed to Hold You Back

What’s preventing you from living the life you desire? What are you afraid of? Why aren’t you already living your life the way you choose? What have you allowed to hold you back?

6. Eliminate Excuses

Now that you know what you’ve allowed to hold you back stop making excuses. People who make excuses can never take charge of their life. That’s because when you make excuse you are putting the locus or location of control of your outside you. If you believe that something is outside of your control, you also believe that you don’t have the power to change it.

What can you do to work around the challenges life throws at you? Stop making excuses and create a plan that will move you in the direction of your dreams.

Stop believing that outside forces control you. Take responsibility for everything in your life. By taking responsibility you’re taking charge of your life.

7. Do first Things First

Every evening make a list of the things you need to do. Then prioritize your list. In the morning begin on the most important item and then work down you list.

Isn’t it Time to Take Charge of Your Life?

You can take charge of your life. Once you do nothing can stop you.

Don’t wait. Start taking the steps you need to take charge of your life today.

A few steps each day become quite significant very quickly. By doing a little bit each day you’ll soon feel in control of your life and start living the life of your dreams.
