I had a client who recently told me that she had become discouraged because, although she had been setting and achieving goals most of her life, she wasn’t able to lose weight. She told me she felt like giving up.

When I asked her why she told me, “I need to lose 50 pounds. I don’t think I can do it!”

So I asked her if she thought she could lose two pounds. She told me, “Of course!”

I told her that’s all she needed to do, lose 2 pounds 25 times. She needed to break the process of setting and achieving her outcome into smaller chunks.

Learn How to Set and Achieve Your Goals!

Let’s say you, like my client, have a big outcome that you want to achieve. The most effective way to achieve a big outcome is to break it up into smaller tasks.

A successful goal setting strategy consists of breaking your long-term outcomes into medium- term milestones and your medium-term milestones into short-term tasks.

You Need a Mix of Short, Medium, and Long-term Goals

Your long-term goals are what you aim at. In the case of my client, her long-term outcome was to lose 50 pounds.

Next you have medium term milestones.

Milestones are checkpoints that keep you on track toward the end result that you desire.

What ties your long and medium-term goals together are short-term, enabling tasks.

These short-term tasks are stepping-stones that move you in the direction of your medium and long-term goals. These enabling or supporting tasks at are the regualr actions you take to help hold you accountable and ensure that you’re consistently taking the steps necessary for achieving the life you desire.

A Strategy for Setting and Achieving the Outcomes You Desire

1. Set Your Long-term Goals

Long term goals are outcomes you want to achieve in one or more years. What do you want to achieve in the next few years?

These broad outcomes will take some time to achieve. These are things like buying a home, graduating from college, or starting your own business. Your long-term outcomes define where you want to be in the future.

A goal that says, “Someday I’ll do this” never gets done. That’s why it’s important to put a specific deadline on your long-term goals. By giving your goals a specific time frame you are holding yourself accountable to complete what you set out to do.

2. Set Your Medium-Term Goals  

Like I said before, medium term milestones are checkpoints that help you track your progress. In the case of my client it was to become 10 pounds lighter every five to six weeks.

Maybe you want to earn a doctorate degree. Your medium-term milestones could be completing each year of school then achieving your Bachelor’s degree in the subject.

Like your long-term outcome, your medium term goals need to have specific time frames. Your deadline will keep you moving forward, motivating you to work toward your long-term goals.

3.  Set and Focus on your Short-term Goals

Your short term tasks can be completed more readily. They build on one another to help you achieve your medium term milestones. In the case of my client, her short term tasks were thing that could help her drop one to two pounds per week.

Going back to the goal of earning a doctorate degree, your short-term goals could be for completing each class as well as the grade you wanted to earn. Other short-term tasks might be to apply for financial aid, enroll in summer classes, or to meet with an academic counselor so that you can outline your education plan.

While these short-term tasks can be anything you want them to be, they should be enabling goals. In other words they should be small, but definite, steps toward your desired end result.

Setting and Achieving Goals Takes Time

It’s important to remember that long-term goals take time to achieve. That’s why setting and achieving goals can seem so daunting.

In order to achieve your goals you need to keep the big picture goals in mind but focus on your medium and short-term goals. These tasks take you to your long-term outcomes.

Think about all three types of goals when you are planning your future. Combined they will help you achieve what you really desire in your life.
