Many clients tell me they have set resolutions and goals and come to my San Diego office to use NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming and hypnotherapy to help them take the action they need to reach their goals. They understand that goal achievement requires more than just setting resolutions and goals.

Even though people who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to achieve their goals than people who don’t, the problem with resolutions is they are just dreams if you don’t take the action needed that move you towards your desired result. In order to achieve anything in life you have to do something!

How can you reach your goals? Reaching your goals can be simple if you have a written, step by step plan to follow every day.

Your written plan can help you put your fears and indecisiveness aside so you can pursue the reality you deserve!

Reaching Your Goals – 7 Simple Tips to Make Your Resolutions a Reality

1. Decide on what you want.

The reason most people don’t reach their goals is they never decide on what they really want. Decisiveness leads to success. If you’re not sure about how you see your life in 5 years, or even just 6 months from now, you have no target and you’ll keep spinning your wheels.

The best thing you can do to help you reach your goals is to pick a path and then stick to it! 

2. Make your goal positive.

This is one that many people overlook. It’s much easier to reach your goal when you state it as what you want rather than what you don’t want. Reaching a goal of “fitting into my size 8 clothes” instead of trying to “lose 10 pounds” puts your mind in the attraction mode and aligns your subconscious mind with what you want to achieve.

3. Make your goal personal.

Your goal need to be about you, not your brother, wife or mother-in-law. As you probably already know you cannot have a goal for your husband or wife to be more sensitive to your needs.

You have no control over other people or things. You only have control over yourself. In order to reach your goals make sure they directly affect and benefit you. Let others worry about what’s best for them.

4. Make your goal practical.

One of the biggest pitfalls people set for themselves is trying to achieve too much too quickly. Unless you go on a crazy diet and exercise plan you’re unlikely to lose 10 pounds in five days. You are not going to become a golf instructor if you’ve never taken a lesson.

To reach your goals you have to make them realistic. This means they need to be something you actually believe you can do in the timeframe you allot for their attainment.

5. Reaching your goals means you have to get started.

This is where the rubber meets the road. The reason most people don’t accomplish anything is they stuck in the “paralysis of analysis”. They’re so busy thinking about what they should do they never get around to doing what they need to do.

As Lao-tzu so elegantly put it, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” In order to achieve anything you need to take that first important step in order to enact your plans.

Just making the initial move will inspire you to follow through with the necessary steps you need to reach your goals. So if your goal is to become a black belt start taking classes or if you want to have a better figure start eating healthier and walking 30 minutes a day. Carpe diem!

6. Break your goals into bite-sized pieces.

As the old adage goes, “How do you eat an elephant?” The answer is, “One bite at a time”, of course. In order to reach your goals you need to break them down into a measureable, step-by-step process that you can achieve a little bit at a time.  This is the only way to have quality, lasting results.

It’s a lot easier to cut fast food out of your diet than all “bad foods”. It’s also easier to walk 15 minutes a day than it is to run five miles. Baby steps are vital to reaching your goals and building your self esteem.

7. Find a model.

The final step is to find someone that can help you on your path, someone with a pattern of behaviors you can duplicate, a model.

Modeling is major component of NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming. A model is someone who has already accomplished the results you are trying to achieve.

The great thing about modeling is that, if you lack experience, your model can steer you along the path while helping you avoid the bumps in the road and help you reach your goals much faster than you could using the trial and error method.

Look for a model that has succeeded doing what you want to accomplish and then use their plan to help you reach your goals. If you need to search for a model, try to find someone online who has written an eBook or a home study course. You can also find and attend a local class.

The investment for both of these is often free or extremely inexpensive, but the additional information could make the difference between failure and reaching your goals and success.

To Reach Your Goals You Need to Take Action

The plans that we create only in our minds often remain merely a dream. The only way to overcome this problem is to take action.

Don’t be held back by complacency, fear of failure, and sheer laziness. Take that first step. An object in motion tends to stay in motion. You’ll only reach your goal by actually chasing it.

If you fail – so what – it’s a lot better to attempt to achieve something great than to attempt nothing at all and succeed.

Remember what the late great Zig Ziglar once said, “What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.”

Just being able to say that you’ve given your all makes you a better person, a person that others will look up to and that you can be proud of.

You only have one life to live. Take the action you need today to reach your goals and then determine to stay the course. With your desire and persistence you can overcome every obstacle in your way of reaching your goals and you can turn your dreams into a reality!
