You probably know that Henry Ford was one of the most highly successful people of his time but did you know that Henry Ford failed and went broke five times before he finally succeeded?

He did, but as you know he recovered.

How did he overcome his failures? By using the habits of highly successful people to navigate around the potholes life presented him. These habits created a smoother and straighter road for him to drive on.

Like Henry Ford you can continue making progress to meet the goals you’ve established for yourself by using the habits of highly successful people. Using these habits you’ll be able to keep your spirits high no mater how bumpy the road becomes.

Use the following habits of highly successful people to help you keep focused on your goals no matter how rough life’s road becomes:

1. Know Your Outcome

What do you want your life to be like?

Outcome based thinking is focusing on what you want your goals to provide you with. By being sure about what it is you really want for your life you can plan your activities both over the short and long term to help you achieve your goals.

2. Make a list of life goals that are short and to the point.

Some good examples of life goals are“: “Build my income to $250,000 a year so that my family and I can live the lifestyle we enjoy while having enough to save for my retirement needs,” Exercise and eat a healthy diet so that I can enjoy a long, healthy life,” and “Retire when I’m 67.”

3. Incorporate tasks that keep you focused on your goals into your everyday life.

Let’s say you have a goal to become a black belt in Tang Soo Do Karate in three year. Have a few books about Tang Soo Do around the house, on your coffee table and nightstand. Get a subscription to Black Belt Magazine. Watch some martial arts videos.

• Put up reminders and tasks to do that are related to meeting your life goals throughout your home. Make your life goals such an integral part of your everyday life that even when life throws a monkey wrench ins your plans, you’ll be able to stay focused on what’s really important to you.

4. Give Yourself Positive Pep Talks

You are talking to yourself all the time. The problem is that much of what you tell yourself isn’t very helpful.

Highly effective people have learned how to use positive self talk to help them stay focused on the good things in their lives. Positive self talk can motivate you to keep working toward your life goals, no matter obstacles you face.

If you’re tired and trying to decide whether you should go to class,  tell yourself, “Training in all my scheduled classes is how I become a black belt.”

• Other examples of positive self-talk are:

“Challenges are just stepping stones to achievement,”

“As long as I keep focused on my goals, I can find a way,” and

“I’ll take the feedback life has given me and grow from it.”

• Positive self-talk will keep your spirits cruising smoothly down the highway of life even when you feel like potholes are popping up everywhere.

5. Focus on What You’ve Already Done

While you may be struggling presently, reflect on what you’ve accomplished in the past week or so to accomplish your goals. Even though you didn’t get to 100% of your scheduled classes, maybe you did go to 80% of them.

• The fact is you did something. Recognizing your achievements will reinforce your efforts to continue to in the pursuit of your goals.

If you’ll use these habits of highly successful people you’ll stay motivated to keep working toward accomplishing your goals no matter the rough ride in front of you.

Stay focused on what you’re after. Keep your life goals part of your daily life. Use positive self-talk. Acknowledge what you’ve done to keep moving forward.

Using these habits will help you stay focused so that you can stay working and meet your life goals. Using these habits you’ll be able to accomplish whatever you put on your GPS, no matter the obstacles you face.
