What is The Subconscious Mind?

What is the subconscious mind? The term come from Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis.

When people think of Freud, they often think of him as some kind of whack job who accused people of being sexually attracted to their parents. But, even though many of his theories have been debunked, he should be remembered for his many contributions to the world of psychology. That’s because, before Freud, there was no psychotherapy or counselling. Also, before Freud, there was no concept of an unconscious or subconscious mind. While Freud preferred the term ‘unconscious”, I like to use the term subconscious.

In Freud’s view, the subconscious mind was everything going on ‘under the surface’ throughout our waking lives. He often likened this to an iceberg – where only the very tip is visible with all the rest being murky and inaccessible. That’s why you might say one thing and think another. But on some level, there is more going on under the surface that even you’re unaware of. Continue reading
