Five Ways to Positively Express Gratitude

Express gratitude How do you feel when someone recognizes your work or is in some way grateful to you? You probably feel fantastic, right?

Do you want to know who to make others feel fantastic? You can make them feel fantastic by noticing when others do things for you and then expressing your gratitude to them

Why It Can Be Hard to Express Gratitude

Knowing how and when to express gratitude is difficult for some people. Why? Because it’s humbling to admit that we need help from others. As a result, gratitude is often mixed up with other feelings like jealousy, envy, embarrassment, or insecurity.

The first thing you need to realize is expressing gratitude does not make you weaker or inferior in any way. Gratitude is simply an expression of your appreciation. When you express gratitude you are simply acknowledging your respect for others.

Learn to Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude

There is so much in your life to be thankful for. By focusing on cultivating an attitude of gratitude, you’ll find that it’s a lot easier to express your thankful feelings to others. An added bonus is people are always more willing to help someone who shows them respect and appreciates them.

Here Are Five Simple Ways to Express Gratitude:

1. Follow the KISS Method

I’ve been told that the KISS method stands for “Keep It Simple Stupid”. Now stupid doesn’t imply that you’re stupid, only to make your plan easy to follow and take action on.

Instead of spending lots of time thinking about the ideal way to best express your gratitude; just say it, right there in the moment.  Simply tell the person “Thank you” or “I appreciate your help” and let that be the end of it.

Expressing gratitude is an important part of the communications you have in your relationships because it builds trust and respect. Make it a habit to express your genuine gratitude as often as possible.

2. Send a Thank You Card or Letter

This can work really well for people who like to write. Plus there is real power in the written word, especially when you use it to express your thanks. Purchase a nice thank you card or grab a nice piece of stationary. Keep it simple and write a few lines to the person, telling them how and why you appreciate them. Since so few people take the time to write by hand nowadays, it’s one of the most personal and powerful ways of expressing gratitude.

You can hand deliver the letter or, better yet, drop it in the mail. It will be a nice surprise in between their stack of junk mail and bills.

3. Give a Small “Thank You” Present

A small gift is a nice way to express your appreciation to someone who goes out of their way to do something nice for you.  The gift doesn’t have to be anything costly or extravagant, just something small and personal that shows them you appreciate what they have done for you.

For example, if they are a coffee lover, give them a gift certificate to their favorite coffee shop. If they are a music lover give them a gift card to ITunes. Remember, a simple gesture can go a long ways.

4. Do Something Nice for Them

When someone does something nice for you, return the favor.  If someone helped you during an especially trying time, explain to them that you want to take them to lunch, dinner, or dessert for being such an instrumental person in your life.

This allows them to know you how much you appreciate them. It also gives you a chance to have a nice conversation and improve your relationship.

5. Be Publicly Grateful

Let other people know your appreciation by expressing gratitude in a public setting, with friends or around family.  Letting people know publicly how grateful you are is important because it shows just how much you appreciate and care for them.

Expressing gratitude publicly can also help you to let go of any insecurities, jealousies, or anger you might have been feeling.

Make Expressing Your Gratitude a Regular Part of Your Life

When you learn to express gratitude you are making your life richer. It improves your communications and, as a result, your relationships.

Make expressing gratitude an integral part of all your relationships. Let go of your fears and simply say “Thanks!” to all those around you. You’ll be so glad you did!
