Many of the people I see in my San Diego office come because they’re in the dumps. They relate a story about how this or that is going terrible in their lives and they just can’t figure out how to fix the problem. They want to use hypnotherapy and NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming to “fix” their thinking so they can find a solution.

When this people tell me this, the first thing I have to tell them is hypnosis and NLP can’t “fix” anything. I tell them of the thousands of clients I’ve seen in my San Diego office, I haven’t been able to “fix” any of them.

That’s because there was nothing “wrong” with them. They simply needed to shift from a negative to a positive mindset.

While developing a positive mindset is something hypnotherapy and NLP can help with, there are also many methods from positive psychology that you can use to develop your positive mindset as well.

There will always be times when you struggle with a life situation or phase but having methods to bolster your mindset during these tough times will help you to navigate through the inevitable rough waters you’ll face. These methods can be emotionally and mentally life-saving.

So where do you find these methods to keep your mindset positive?

You can use these methods from positive psychology to both develop and shore up your attitude when times get tough.

1. Contact a Mentor or Parent

Having a parent or mentor that can provide you with feedback can be very helpful when you’re facing tough times. Parents can be exceptionally helpful because, even if you don’t believe it, they truly have your best interests at heart. While you may not agree with them you’ll know they are giving you the best advice they have.

And remember, with parents it’s rarely too late. If you don’t currently have the type of relationship where you willingly seek guidance from your mom or dad, give it a try.

Developing a closer relationship with your parents can do wonders not only for your relationship with them but for your overall sense of mental wellbeing. A good relationship with your parents can be one of the most rewarding emotional connections possible in life.

2. Recall Similar Situations

Your attitude is intricately connected with your experiences. Instead of dwelling on the present negative situation think about successful situations you’ve navigated through in the past.

Perhaps you are in the midst of a situation at work where your boss seems to be reacting negatively to you. Instead of trying to find a solution you start thinking that your boss just doesn’t like you.

This type of mindset definitely isn’t positive and just isn’t very helpful. To change your mindset start to recall anything related to that type of situation that you’ve been through in the past.

Ask yourself these questions;

“What did I do in that situation?”

“How would those actions work for me now?”

“How could I adjust the actions I took to work in my current situation?”

The key to shift from a negative to a positive mindset is to learn from your past experiences and use them to get you through your current crisis.

3. Read Positive Psychology or Self Help Books

Get a Greater Understanding of Hypnosis and Your Subconscious

Here’s a thought that can help you through any situation.  Your situation is not unique. Someone else has gone through a very similar situation to you and has used it to develop a positive mindset.

Find a positive psychology or self help book and read it. But don’t just read it, reflect on what you read. Are there experiences the author shared that really resonated with you? Determine which parts might work for you and then put them to work for you.

4. Get Feedback from Friends You Respect

Friends can often offer insight from their own experience that can assist you with your present situation. Another benefit is just being around your friends can bolster your attitude and help you break out of your funk.

Your friends might share stories and then follow them with comments such as, “This is what I did and it did not work for me.” While their solution might not be a perfect fit for your situation, if just might shed some insight on your current struggle.

Let you friends help develop your positive mindset with their stories and experiences.

5. Pay Attention

Sometimes the answer can be right in front of you. Pay attention, observe and listen.

When you’re feeling like your attitude needs a boost, watch what other do and say. Some people won’t directly share their experiences but offer advice through their behavior.

Open your eyes and learn from the experiences of others. If you don’t pay attention you just won’t notice it.

6. Listen to Recordings, Watch Videos

For years I’ve searched for and used tapes, videos and books to help develop a positive mindset. So can you.

In fact, advances in technology allow you have instant access to this same knowledge, expertise and information, often for free or a very small investment. In fact, go find something online to watch or listen to right after you finish my article.

Having a positive mindset doesn’t happen by accident. Be on the lookout for things that can shift your attitude and inspire you.

You can choose to have a positive mindset. By choosing this path you’ll enrich your life in ways you haven’t even considered and develop the life of your dreams.
