Cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude

Expressing gratitude “Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.”Brain Tracy

Not long ago a client came to my San Diego office wanting me that told me he was feeling down and depressed. He wanted me to “fix him” using NLP and hypnosis.

After explaining that I wasn’t in the business of “fixing’ anybody I asked him what was going on. It turned out he had made a few investment blunders and his net worth, which was substantial, had shrunken by about 40 percent. He kept repeating how he “ couldn’t believe this was happening to him”.

So I asked him, “Do you have anything you could be grateful for?”

 How Gratitude Helps

What happens when someone sincerely expresses his or her gratitude to you for something you did? Doesn’t it make you feel good about yourself? The positive feelings you receive from their comments can lift you up, boost your enthusiasm, and motivate you to achieve even more.

The same goes for when you are grateful. Feeling grateful for what you have can produce the same good feelings and sustain your drive toward your goals.

How Gratitude Helps You Get What You Want

Expressing gratitude is an excellent way to get what you want out of life. It does this by helping you focus on the positive in the world around you.

When you are grateful you start to feel better about yourself and the world around you. Positive thoughts start to flow in your mind and you draw more of what you want into your life. This makes you feel even more grateful.

So you see, expressing gratitude can have some seriously positive snowball effects.

5 Benefits of Expressing Gratitude

  1. Showing Gratitude helps you reach your goals

Expressing gratitude tends to be a lasting and selfless feeling. Showing your gratitude gives you much more than just a momentary burst of positive energy; it has staying power that will provide you with the long lasting power you need to reach your goals.

2. Expressing gratitude strengthens your relationships

It’s so easy to take the people we love for granted. Expressing your gratitude is a good way to remind you of how much your loved ones mean to you. There are so many ways for showing your gratitude. You can express your gratitude by saying, “Thank you,” writing a letter, or giving them a thoughtful gift.

When you learn to avoid taking your loved ones for granted, you’ll have a long lasting and loving relationship.

3. Showing gratitude improves your communication.Expressing your gratitude can help your communications by making them better received. Everyone enjoys hearing a grateful statement directed at them. By showing your gratitude people around you will naturally be more interested in helping you.

4. Expressing gratitude can help people accept constructive criticism

No matter how you express it, criticism, no mater how constructive, can make the recipient defensive or even angry. In this situation, showing your gratitude for their positive qualities before criticizing them can take you a long way.

No one likes to hear negative comments about their work or behavior. Before giving constructive criticism to anyone emphasize what you appreciate about them.

5. Showing Gratitude helps you preserve positive memories

An excellent way of developing an attitude of gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal. You can preserve memories in a positive way when you keep a gratitude journal. This allows you to enjoy your happy memories again and again when you read about them in the future.

Show Your Gratitude Every Day

While showing gratitude seems like a selfless act, it’s actually something that you benefit from. Showing your gratitude daily changes the way you think.

Expressing your gratitude helps you, like my client how had lost 40% of his net worth, to appreciate how good your life actually is by helping you focus on the good things in your life.

Sometimes negative events happen and can seem overwhelming. They happen to everyone, but you can minimize them by expressing gratitude for the good things in your life.

Your days on this earth are numbered but you have the choice of how to live them, filled with gratitude or despair. I suggest you cherish the time that you do have by expressing gratitude for everything, good and not so good. This will allow you to enjoy the benefits of living each day as if it were your last.
