Many people that come to my San Diego office tell me they “just don’t have the willpower” to eat right and exercise. They want to use Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnotherapy (hypnosis) to help them develop the right eating and exercise habits.

While hypnotherapy and NLP are very powerful methods for developing optimum health habits in your subconscious mind, in order to keep those habits you have to reinforce them consciously. That’s the power of positive daily affirmations.

What Are Affirmations?

An affirmation is a phrase that you say over and over to yourself. You use affirmations all the time. The problem is you probably don’t think about the ones you already use.

For example, after eating a piece of cake much larger than you wanted to you might say “I can’t resist cake. I wish I could but I can’t.”

When skipping a workout you might use another negative affirmation such as, “Skipping one day won’t hurt; I’ll make it up tomorrow.”

These are examples of negative affirmations. These affirmations will not help you achieve optimum health.

Purposely Using Positive Daily Affirmations

In those moments when you feel weak and you don’t want to eat right or exercise positive daily affirmations that focus on developing optimum health can be just what you need to help you decide on the healthy choice.

Instead of allowing your mind to make up negative affirmations and excuses you can use positive daily affirmations to replace those negative thought processes.

The great thing about using daily affirmations is they work – if you allow them to.

For example, if you find yourself thinking about a quick stop at a junk food stop, repeat a positive daily affirmation in your mind. This conscious act will remind you of your desire to have optimum health.

Affirmations help you become more consciously and subconsciously aware of your optimum health goals.

Examples of Healthy Daily Affirmations

Let’s say you find yourself tempted to drive through the fast food joint. Instead you can use an affirmation like, “I take care of my body by eating healthy foods” or “the better I eat, the better I feel.”

Maybe you’re struggling to “find the time” to exercise you can tell yourself, “I enjoy the healthy feeling exercise brings to me” or “The more I take care of myself, the better I feel.”

Using positive daily affirmations like these will give you the gentle push you need when you need it.

Make a point to repeat your positive daily affirmations to yourself several times each day and especially when you need the encouragement. Like any habit, it can take a bit of time, but, with a little practice, you’ll soon find yourself making healthy choices more often.
