According to the American Psychological Association, stress negatively affects, either physically or psychologically, over 70 percent of all Americans. Psychological symptoms can range from feeling nervous to feeling irritable and angry. Physical symptoms can range from headache and upset stomach to a change in appetite or sex drive.

Because stress can cause so many different symptoms, many clients come to my San Diego office to use advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) to help them relieve their stress symptoms. While hypnosis and NLP are very effective natural ways to relieve stress I like to teach my clients other things to do that can move them off the stress treadmill.

9 Natural Ways to Relieve Stress

The following are the same kind of easy to follow, nearly effortless ways to relieve stress that I teach my San Diego clients. Let’s take a look at 9 of them…

1. Choose How You Start Your Day 

Most people first thing in the morning listen to the radio, read the newspaper or watch the TV to find out the news. One problem with this is that it allows other people to start your day. A second and perhaps bigger problem is that watching all that news negatively affects your attitude.

You just don’t need all that news!

Allow yourself to take a media break for a while or at least cut it down, especially first thing in the morning. Instead read an inspiring book, practice deep breathing exercises or just go for a long walk in your neighborhood.

You’ll be amazed at what even just a few days of this can do to improve your frame of mind. You might even find that you want to give up the news for good.

2. Practice Using Positive Daily Affirmations

Using positive daily affirmations are one of the easiest natural ways to relieve stress. In addition they can help you to achieve a better life for yourself.

Because of the type of environment you’re in you may be running negative stress-producing thoughts through your mind on a regular basis without even realizing it. Using positive daily affirmations you can intentionally replace those negative images with positive thoughts and pictures.

A positive affirmation you could use to relive your stress is “I breathe deeply when stress assaults me.” This can teach your subconscious mind to take deep breaths when you’re in a particularly stressful situation.

Don’t know what positive daily affirmations are or how to use them? There are loads of books on the market with examples of what they are and how to use them. You can also find many of them on this website.

3. Reduce Your Caffeine

Reduce the amount of caffeine you take in daily or, if you can, stay away from caffeine completely. Yes, caffeine gives you energy but if caffeine gives makes you jumpy and gives you roller coaster energy swings. The temporary boost it gives you might not be worth its cost.

4. Practice Deep Breathing

Deep breathing is one of the most natural ways to relieve stress. It has been around since the beginning of time and is practiced by groups all over the world.

Instead of watching TV first thing in the morning after you wake up, practice deep breathing for 10 or 15 minutes. It will help get your mind and body ready to go.

You can also use deep breathing when dealing with conflict or when things aren’t going well.  Just find a place where you can sit back and relax, (the bathroom works well for this) close your eyes, and take a few big, deep breathes. Soon you’ll feel calm and relaxed and ready to go.

5. Exercise Regularly

One of the biggest problems with stress is how it can affect your ability to release adrenaline and other stress hormones. This can lead to chronic insomnia and other related problems

To counteract this, get plenty of exercise. Exercise does this by releasing endorphins which just help release stress hormones and just makes you feel good. In addition to being good for your overall health, exercise can change your focus and quickly pop you out of a worried state of mind.

6. Change Your Eating Habits

Eating better is another one of the natural ways to relieve stress that you’ll get results from almost instantly. That’s because what you take into your body can stress you out.

We already talked about lowering or eliminating the amount of caffeine you take in. Other things you can eliminate are processed foods and refined sugars.

You can replace these with healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. This can help you feel less stressed and better almost immediately.

7. Keep a Journal  

Journaling can help you keep track of your stress triggers. By writing them down you can know what to look for and figure out ways to counteract them.

Also journaling can help you get a more balanced outlook. Start writing down both everything that worries you and everything you love about your life (that you can think of in one sitting). You might find that your life isn’t so bad after all.

8. Get Rid of the Negative People in Your Life

People with too much negative emotion can suck the energy right out of you. If there are negative, toxic people in your life, that is, people who make you feel uncomfortable, bad about yourself, lacking in some way, make a point to limit the amount of time you spend with them or get rid of them altogether! These people do nothing except add to your level of stress.

9. If You Need it, Get Help

Sometimes it’s good to seek help to reduce your stress level. Excellent ways to relieve stress are seeing either a trained counselor or hypnotherapist.

A trained counselor or hypnotherapist can help you uncover your stress triggers and give you unique, targeted natural alternatives to deal with them.

Although the things that stress you out will continue, using these natural ways to relieve stress will give you the choice of how you deal with them and therefore how they affect you.
