How to Build Your Self Confidence

“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”Theodore Roosevelt

Of all the things in life that can predict success, none is greater that your belief in yourself.  Self confidence is a great predictor of success.

Your self confidence can help you accomplish things that, at first, seem impossible. Your belief in yourself will keep you motivated and focused on completing what others would give up on.

The Need to Build Your Self Confidence

When you have self confidence, you know at the deepest level that you have the ability to handle anything that life throws your way.

You recognize that¸ although things may be tough at the moment, you can get through it.

Problems arise when that voice deep inside you says, “I’m not sure that I can handle this.”

If this happens as it always will, it makes sense to have a few ways to build your self confidence up so you can get through them and back on track.

How to Build Your Self Confidence

1. Take an inventory.

If you were to describe yourself to someone who doesn’t know you, how would you describe yourself? Take an inventory of who you are and write description of you.

“[Your name] is a person who_____________.”

Make a list of all your attributes, when you’re finished, read it out loud to yourself. Ask yourself, “Does this give the reader a clear idea of who I am?”

2. Determine Your Reactions and Responses

You need to develop a real understanding for how you react in certain situations.

For example, if someone tells you he’s angry with you about something you did, what do you do and say? Do you become defensive and lash out or do you ask for more information so that you can try to understand his point of view?

If someone asks you for help, how do you respond? Do you immediately say “yes” or “no”, or do you put off making a decision by saying, “I’ll get back to you”?

Noticing your behavioral patterns in challenging situations will help you see your capabilities.

3. Understand and Be Okay With How You Feel

An excellent method to build your self confidence is to be able to understand and be comfortable with your own feelings.

First you need to recognize what you’re feeling and then put a label it. For example, do you feel sadness as your children grow and become independent? Do you feel pride?

When viewing a particularly touching commercial or a sad or touching movie it’s okay to choke up and shed a tear. This is especially true for you men out there.

By getting in touch with your feelings you’re finding out who you really are.

4. Look for Your Strengths

While most people can identify their weak areas right off the bat, it’s sometimes a challenge to see our strong points. In fact, when people are interviewed, they are often asked about their strengths and then struggle to answer.

Take a little time to think about your strengths and make a list of them. Recognizing the areas of life in which you do really well is a great way to build your self confidence.

5. Remember and Reflect on Your Struggles

You’ve already gone through many struggles in your life. Reflect on them and then remind yourself how you made it through those challenging episodes.

Remembering your struggles and reflecting on how you made it through them will definitely build your self confidence. Reflecting on the struggles you’ve risen above helps you to realize that you can get through the tough times.

If you’re like most people you can probably easily recount all the difficult phases you’ve gone through in life. Some of which seemed almost insurmountable at the time.

Yet you’re still here, surviving and maybe even thriving.

It took courage and strength to get you to where you are in life today.

Never let yourself forget this fact. Tell yourself “If I did that, then I can accomplish this too!”

For example, maybe you worked your way through college or even graduate school, working full time and supporting your family. When you remember and reflect on this time in your life you’ll understand that was quite a struggle and accomplishing your goal to graduate was quite a feat.

That’s a pretty incredible achievement. Acknowledge it and use it to build your self confidence.

6. Understand that Mistakes are a Part of Life

When is comes to a method to build self confidence this tip just might be the most important one on the list.

Many people have a hard time admitting a mistake. Don’t be one of these people.

Instead be comfortable with admitting you made a mistake. If you don’t admit that you’ve made a mistake to yourself and others on a regular basis you’ll lack self confidence because you’ll have difficulty believing in yourself.

In order to believe in yourself, you must be honest with yourself and others.

When you’re not honest with yourself you’ll lack the self confidence you need to achieve your goals and dreams.

Look, you’re only human. It’s okay to be wrong, in fact, I would hallucinate that everyone is wrong a least a half dozen times a day.

The easiest way to solve a problem or find a solution is to acknowledge, “I did something wrong.”

Only by admitting your mistake can you take corrective action. You can only take corrective action when you recognize that you make a mistake in the first place.

So an easy way to build your self confidence, if you’re not already doing it, is to start openly and honestly acknowledging your errors.  Then you can go fix them.
