5 Steps for Finding your Passion in Life

finding your passion“Let others lead small lives, but not you. Let others argue over small things, but not you. Let others cry over small hurts, but not you. Let others leave their future in someone else’s hands, but not you.”

This quote by Jim Rohn is about letting go of all the small stuff and finding your passion in life. You see when you find your passion, your purpose in life you start focusing on what’s important.

When you focus on what’s important you take hold of the steering wheel of your life. You give your life direction.

Finding Your Passion – Why Are You Here?

As America’s #1 Mental Fitness coach I often have clients that come to me telling me that they lack direction. They want to use advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP to put themselves on track.

One of the first things I ask these clients is “What is your life’s purpose? What in life are you passionate about?”

Often they answer, “I don’t know.”

Learn How to Find Your Passion!

When it comes to being successful nothing will compare to finding your passion in life. Finding your purpose, your passion in life will motive you and guide you swiftly along your path to success, wherever that takes you, than anything else.

So what is your purpose in life? Why are you here?

While most people wonder about this, few people ever figure it out.

Remember – Your Passion is Unique

Did you know that everyone who has ever lived is unique?

There is no one, not even identical twins that have the exact same DNA as another person. Just as our DNA is different, everyone has been created with a unique set of passions and talents that no one else in the world can duplicate!

Discovering your passion, your destiny and your purpose in life allows you use your unique set of aptitudes and abilities to bring a greater level of self-fulfillment and happiness to you.

The Benefits of Finding Your Passion in Life

When you’re doing what you are passionate about, what you feel like you were born to do, your life has purpose and meaning.

Finding your passion allows you to create the kind of life you really enjoy. You’re happier.

Your goals are more meaningful and your challenges easier to overcome as you happily move toward achieving those goals on a consistent basis.

Keep in mind that while finding your passion in life, keeping an open mind is not only helpful but can speed you toward your destination.

The Process for Finding Your Passion in Life

Finding your passion is a process. The good news is that it’s a process anyone can use.

The tools you need for discovering your passion are a piece of paper, something to write with, and an hour or so of quiet time.

As you do this exercise write down whatever thoughts pop into your mind.

To make it easier, try to empty your mind of preexisting prejudices as much as possible. What you’ll find is that the clearer your mind is, the quicker and easier the process will be.

Finally, find a quiet place where you can relax and work undisturbed.

How to Find Your Passion and Purpose

“Nothing truly valuable arises from ambition or from a mere sense of duty; it stems rather from love and devotion towards men and towards objective things.”  – Albert Einstein

1. Decide on Your Outcome

In NLP we talk about needing to have an outcome. An outcome is simply what you want to accomplish, your goal.

The reason you need to decide on your outcome is because the more you precisely and positively identify what it is that you want the more likely it is your brain will discover ways to accomplish it.

Answer these questions: What would want your life’s outcome to be? What would you like people to remember you for?

Whatever it is, write it at the top of your paper under the words “This is my life’s outcome.”

Simply writing down your life’s outcome helps your mind focus on your objective.

2. Acknowledge ALL Your Feelings – Even Your Doubts – About This Process and Write Them Down

In order to reduce resistance you need to acknowledge all your feelings about this process, even your doubts. As you relax and think about your outcome recognize all thoughts that come to mind.

Write down whatever thoughts pop into your mind, no matter what they might be.

For example, if the thought, “This isn’t going to work,” pops into your head then write, “This isn’t going to work.”

What this does is honor that part of your subconscious mind that is resistant and that might hold you back. By recognizing it you reduce the chance of it sabotaging your efforts.

This will give you a much better chance of success.

3. Brainstorm Answers About Your Purpose

The questions you ask will control your focus. So finding your passion in life is about asking yourself questions that revolve around what you want your life’s outcome to be.

Here are some questions that will help you find your purpose and passion in life.

  • What is your most important priority in your life? Family? Work? Spirituality? Something else?
  • What activities that you participate in excite you?
  • What kind of activities are you passionate about?
  • Is there anything you’ve always wanted to do, but you haven’t done it yet? What is it?
  • What talents and abilities to you have? What can you use these talents and abilities for?
  • Which talents and abilities would you like to develop further? Why?
  • What groups of people do you like being around the most? Adults? Teens? Children? Why?
  • What group or type of people do you enjoy helping? Why?
  • Do you like to travel? Where?
  • What would make your life more exciting? How would that make your life more exciting?
  • Who is your favorite author or playwright? Why?
  • What books and movies do you enjoy the most? Why?
  • Do you love being around animals? What kind of animals?
  • How do you feel about your relationships? How could you improve your relationships?
  • Would you like to be a philanthropist?
  • Would you like to become more involved in politics or world matters?

4. How Will You Know When You Achieved Your Outcome?

In order to know that you’ve achieved your life’s purpose you need to define what you will see, what you will hear what you will feel with its accomplishment. The reason is that if you don’t know how it will appear to you, you might miss it.

By going through this process, finding your passion, your life’s purpose will seem obvious. It may even cause you to become emotional and/or cry.

Whatever the idea is, it will resonate deep within you and you’ll find you don’t have any doubts at all.

Write down a description of what you will see, what you will hear what you will feel when you have accomplished whatever it is you set out to do. Just continue writing any thought that pops into your mind until you reach that point.

5. Review Your Outcome Daily

Now that you’ve found your passion and uncovered your life’s purpose, do everything to ensure its accomplishment. One of the easiest ways to do this is to write it down on a 3 x 5 card and review it daily.

Paste your 3 x 5 card on your bathroom mirror or anywhere else you’ll see it regularly. This way when you are making a decision to do something you can ask yourself, “Is what I’m doing taking me in the direction of fulfilling my life’s purpose?”

When you live your life like this, with direction and intentionality, you have placed your feet firmly on the path of self-fulfillment and happiness.

How Do You Benefit from Finding Your Passion in Life?

Finding your passion in life enables you to tune in to your inner self. This will help you figure out the things that drive you and make you tick.

In the words of Jerry Gillies, after you find your passion and purpose in life, “you will suddenly have all the energy and imagination you will ever need.”
