5 Simple Tips for Relieving Stress

relieving stressIt seems that everyone is stress out about one thing or another today. As America’s #1 Mental Fitness Coach, I often have the opportunity to talk to people about using NLP and hypnosis for relieving stress. In fact, being stressed out and anxious about life is one of the biggest reasons clients visit my San Diego office.

While hypnotherapy is very useful is very helpful for relieving stress, you need to have a quiet place and a few minutes to relax and this is not always practical. That’s why I like to teach my clients simple ways to relax and re-energize right in the moment that can help them to relieve their stress and doesn’t require a lot of time or equipment.

Here are 5 Simple Tips for Relieving Stress

1. Deep Breathing

No matter where you are, in a line 5 deep at the post office or waiting for your child who is 15 minutes late at the bus stop, instead of stressing out, use that time to relax your body by practicing deep breathing.

Deep breathing helps calm your parasympathetic nervous system which helps you to relax. It also increases the oxygen level in your blood. That extra oxygen then circulates in your blood providing your body with the extra energy it needs to recharge.

The great thing about deep breathing is not only will it help you to relax; it will also help to clear your mind and reduce brain fog that sometimes sets in during the middle of the day. After a few deep breaths you will feel much more alert and ready to tackle your next project.

Deep breathing can be done anywhere when you’re feeling stressed or just want to clear your mind.

You don’t have to spend a lot of time doing this; just five slow deep breaths will do the trick. The best method is to inhale deeply through your nose and exhale from your mouth.

2. Move Around or Take a Walk

When you’re at work it’s often hard to find time to relax. Your boss might even get angry with your for “relaxing.” Oh the horror! However, there are some techniques you can do while you’re at work to help create a sense of calm that aren’t so obvious to others.

If your job, like many office workers today, requires you to sit staring at a computer all day, get up and move around for a few minutes every hour. Moving around helps circulate the blood throughout your body which will make you feel more alert and focused.

To relieve your neck tension, close your eyes and roll your head around, from side to side and from front to back. Not only does this relax your neck muscles it also helps to increase blood flow to your brain, which will help to better focus on your work.

Instead of eating on your break, go for a walk. You can also do this at lunch after you eat instead of exchanging juicy tidbits about your co-workers. Walking is a great way to clear your mind and, as an added benefit, will help you stay in shape or shed those pounds you’ve been trying to get rid of.

3. Smile

Studies have found that smiling helps you to relax and rejuvenates your body. So make a decision to smile at the people around you.

Smile at your co-workers. Not only will it help you relax, it’ll help them like you while relaxing them as well.

Also, make it a practice to smile at your children. When you’re rushing around from activity to activity it can be easy to forget to smile, especially at loud and busy children. Smiling at your children helps to create a peaceful environment that everyone will enjoy.

4. Laugh

Studies have also found that laughter is an instant stress reliever. While there are times you can laugh by yourself, it’s even better when you can involve other people in your laughter with you.

Easy ways to do this are to tell a funny joke or story to a co-worker (at an appropriate time, of course) or, if you’re with your kids, play a fun game or sing a silly song as you’re driving.

If you’re at your desk find a funny video on YouTube to watch. Just do something that will make you laugh.

5. Visualize

Visualization, which is a key part of hypnotherapy, can be a very beneficial way to relieve stress.

When you’re rushing through a busy day, take just a few moments to close your eyes and visualize a place or experience that makes you feel happy or calm. Imagine how it smells, how the air feels, and who’s around.

Visualization allows your imagination to flow and can give you instant relief from any stress you are feeling. If you practice visualizing for just five minutes you’ll feel relaxed, reenergized and ready to face the real world again.
