As you probably already know, setting and achieving goals is one of the keys to success in life. Achieving your goals can make you feel satisfied, successful and certain about the world and your place in it.

But sometimes no matter how hard you try and how much work you put into them, it can feel like achieving goals is impossible. It’s here where you don’t want to give up.

There is No Straight Path to Success

Goals go through phases. As you go along the twisting path of life there will be “potholes” that you’ll have to navigate around.

One of the keys to success in life is to simply persist.

As you keep at it things will calm down and “magically” you’ll discover a smoother, straighter road.

5 Keys to Setting and Achieving Goals

Achieving your goals means staying focused on what you want in life. This will keep your spirits high as you run into life’s potholes. One of the biggest keys to success in life, then, is to achieve your goals no matter what.

Here’s a list of 5 keys to success in life. Use these keys to continue going for your goals even though life’s road gets bumpy:

1. Know Exactly What You Want

In order to get anywhere you need to know your destination. What do you want your life to be like? Take some time to write down exactly what you want your life to be like. Once you’re sure you can plan your activities over the short and long term to help you achieve your goals.

2. Keep Your Goal List Short and to the Point

Make a list of 5 to 7 big goals. Examples of goals are things like: “Investing 10% of my yearly earnings in my retirement fund,” “Vacationing twice a year and once every tree years out of the country” and “Keeping my body healthy and fit.”

3. Make Achieving Your Goals Part of Your Everyday Life

Let’s say one of your goals is to take a trip to China in three years. You might have a couple of books about China laying around the house, on your coffee table and nightstand. Find out information about China on the web. Watch travel television to find out where in China you’d like to visit.

By keeping reminders of your goals around they become part of your everyday life. Now, even if life gets bumpy, you’ll be able to keep your eyes on what’s really important to you, achieving your goals.

4. Use Positive Self Talk

Using positive self talk can be quite helpful in achieving your goals. When things get tough, positive self talk can keep you focused and motivated to keep on track.

You can tell yourself, “Achieving my goals is what I do best. I will persevere despite the obstacles I encounter.”

Another example of positive self-talk is “I can get through this challenge just as I have in the past.” You can also use, “As I keep focused on my goal, things will turn out okay.”

Positive self-talk keeps your spirits up when you feel the road you’re on seems hard to travel.

5. Acknowledge and Congratulate Yourself for What You’ve Already Accomplished and Keep Moving Forward

Even though you may be struggling, think about what you accomplished today or just this week to achieve your goals. Maybe you made a couple of phone calls to potential clients, gathered information from the internet to, or figured out new ways to trim your budget.

The fact is you did something.

Recognizing your accomplishments will reinforce your efforts in your path to goal achievement. This will keep you motivated and moving forward toward your goals.

Never Give Up!

Remember the words of Winston Churchill, “Never give up!” Keep working on achieving your goals no matter what obstacles life throws at you.

Stay focused on what you’re after. Make achieving your goals part of your daily life. Use positive self-talk. Acknowledge and congratulate yourself for what you’ve already done and keep moving forward.

Apply these keys to success in life every day. By applying them consistently they will work for you to help you achieve your goals.

Then you can accomplish whatever you want no matter what obstacles life throws at you.
