Using NLP to Win Friends and Influence People

Some clients come to my San Diego office looking for ways to, in the words of Dale Carnegiewin friends and influence people and, because they have heard NLP can help, want me to teach them Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques for building rapport. Here’s what I teach them…

NLP and Rapport

It doesn’t matter if you want to win friends and influence people for business reasons or for personal reasons such as meeting someone you’re romantically interested in, Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP rapport building techniques are very practical for anyone wanting to start or improve their relationships.

This is because these Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques can help you build almost instant rapport with almost anyone, nearly any time you’d like.

What is Rapport?

Black Belt Secrets of How to Win Friends and Influence People

Rapport is the ability to bond with another person as you would with a friend. When it comes to making a good first impression it’s something you want to be able to do almost instantly.

It’s really the only way you have an opportunity to win friends influence people.

Why? Because good rapport puts other people at ease.

They treat you as a person they are comfortable with, a person they’d like to hang out with and get to know better.

A Technique Anyone Can Use to Win Friends and Influence People

The first thing I teach people is not even an Neuro Linguistic Programming technique and isn’t a secret but it is one of the simplest things you can do to win friends and influence people.

It is something you should practice all the time.

The first thing you should do is smile!

It is amazing how few people actually smile or look even remotely happy that they are alive and healthy on the most interesting planet in the universe. Just smiling sets you apart in a world of grumpy looking people.

Why Smiling Helps to Win friends and Influence People

There are a couple of reasons why a smile can do more to help you feel good, and gain a positive response than any other physical act.

First, it has been scientifically proven that when you stand up straight and smile, it is actually physically impossible to feel down and depressed.

The same is true when you scowl and hunch up, it is physically impossible to feel good.

Don’t believe me, try smiling and feeling bad. You just can’t do it!

Second, when you smile, the other person’s reptilian brain doesn’t view you as a threat. This allows the other person to warm up to you much faster.

Win Friends and Influence People Using NLP Rapport Building Techniques

The NLP rapport building technique that will help you to quickly win friends and influence people is to simply understand the representational system or processing style of the person you are trying to gain rapport with and then use the language of their representational system to communicate with them.

By understanding and using their representation system you are almost certain to win friends and influence people more quickly and easily.

Representational System

People process information in one of three main ways:

Visually

Auditory

Kinesthetically

There are also the olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste) representational systems that we’ll include in the kinesthetic representational system.

Why is Understanding a Representational System So Important?

If you want to win friends influence people, knowing their representational system can give you a much better chance of successful developing instant rapport

How?

Let’s say you are going to talk with three people who just finished watching a play.

The Visual Representational System

The person that primarily process information using the visual representational system might talk about the scenery. They might talk about how the actors looked or their costumes.

They will describe what they saw using words like, “saw, image, picture,” etc.

People that primarily process information using the visual representational system learn by watching. When they recall data from their mind, they see it in pictures and use these pictures to process that data.

Using NLP rapport building you would notice these types of words and then reflect similar words back to them.

“I see what you mean.”

That’s a very graphic image you’re describing.”

The Auditory Representational System

The person that primarily process information using the auditory representational system might talk about the actor’s voice. They might talk about how the music sounded or their how the room enabled the sound.

They will describe what they saw using words like, “heard, sound, tone,” etc.

People that primarily process information using the auditory representational system learn by hearing or listening.

Using NLP rapport building you would notice these types of words and then reflect similar words back to them.

“I hear what you mean.”

That’s sounds right to me.”

The Kinesthetic Representational System

The person that primarily process using the kinesthetic representational system might talk about how the big the room felt. They might talk about how a smell wafted through the air or their how the uncomfortable their seat was.

They will describe what they saw using words like, “felt, experience, touched,” etc.

People that primarily process information using the kinesthetic representational system learn by touching or by a sense of feel. They process information by developing a sense of rhythm, flow, and feel. They learn best by touching and by using.

They tend to describe themselves as “hands on” people.

Using NLP rapport building you would notice these types of words and then reflect similar words back to them.

“I feel like that too.”

That really touched you didn’t it?”
