I often see clients that want to use the techniques found in advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic programming (NLP) to get more out of life. They tell me that they want to gain more confidence and raise their self esteem so that they can break out of their comfort zone and develop the life of their dreams.

One of the first things I ask these clients when they come into my San Diego office is, “What are your goals?”

What’s interesting is that many of these clients give me the “what are you talking about Willis?” look. The one that tells me they haven’t ever thought about what they want in life and wonder why they aren’t happy. If they haven’t thought about this then how would they know if they are happy?

Other clients give me generalities, such as, “I want to make a lot of money” or “I want a relationship with the right person”.

While this is better than no goals it’s just not enough to live a self fulfilling life. For this to happen, you need to have specific goals and specific measures to know when you have accomplished them. So with these clients I ask the question, “What does that mean?” or “How will you know when you’ve achieved that?”

How Do You Figure Out Where You Want to Go?

For you to achieve anything in life your goals need to be specific. You need to know exactly where you are going and at least how you’re going to start your journey.

By setting these goals you begin to develop a vision of who you want to be. By using creative visualization you’ll develop the image of the person you need to become to attain what you want in life. You’ll also gain the confidence you need to achieve it. This process will catapult you in the direction of the success you desire.

3 Steps to Building Your Future

Today I want to give you a process that allows you to use creative visualization to develop a vision, an image for every segment of your life, so you know where you are headed spiritually, socially, relationally, physically, financially and more.

1. Write down your vision for every area of your life.

First on separate sheets in a notebook write down the areas of your life you’d like to improve. At the very least write financial vision, physical vision, relationships vision, social vision and spiritual vision. Then on each of these pages write a couple of paragraphs describing what you’d like to have or be. Let your imagination run wild and remember, there’s no right or wrong. In fact, you probably won’t have a great view of your dreams the very first time you try the exercise. Just go for a reasonable guess to start.

As you write your vision remember to focus on the positive, what you want. If you focus on what you don’t want, saying things like, “I don’t want to be lonely anymore” you will only bring about more loneliness. Envision what it would be like to be in the relationship of your dreams and what that person would be like. This is what you want, so write about what that would be like for you.

Although this may be difficult at first, it gets easier with practice and you’ll find that the rewards are spectacular when you can do it consistently. You’ll begin to notice that your life seems as if you can change it at will, which you can.

2. Read Your Vision Out Loud to Yourself Morning and Night

Read your vision statements out loud every morning and every night.  As you read it imagine that aspect of your life matching your vision perfectly. How does achieving your vision make you feel? Does it make you excited and enthusiastic? Can you see yourself as you achieve your goals and dreams? Does it seem to be appealing to you on all levels?

3. Continue to Update Your Vision 

As you move along with this process you’ll find that you feel great about some of your vision, other parts you’ll feel that you need to do a little adjusting. Continue refining the image of your dream life until you find that doing your visualization feels absolutely spectacular. Re-write each new version to match that feeling.

Another thing to remember is that you’ll need to continue to make adjustments throughout your life. As you acquire one set of goals you’ll set new ones, requiring you to create an even more exciting and self fulfilling life.

Of all the things you could do to quickly improve your life, none work better than using creative visualization to develop the life of your dreams. Think of this process as an investment in your future.
