Some people procrastinate because they are perfectionists. Since perfection is impossible a perfectionist can’t finish anything because they have a set of unrealistic standards. As a result they never start anything. They end up putting everything off.

Some procrastinators are easily distracted. They have trouble focusing on the tasks at hand. When something comes up they are easily thrown off track and end up not accomplishing anything.

Other people procrastinate because the task they need to complete seems too overwhelming. The job seems too much to handle, so they put it off until later or find other things to do to keep them busy.

There is always a price to pay for procrastinating. A student who procrastinates rather than studying for a big exam may fail their classes. A team member who puts off working on their part of a big project can make the deadline slip which can result in career challenges or even termination.

Procrastination brings stress which can lead to serious medical issues. Then, if you ignore certain symptoms and procrastinate making an appointment with the doctor, you can get seriously ill or even die! Small health issues have a way of becoming bigger ones if you avoid getting them checked out.

Use these 5 tips to stop procrastinating and start getting things done:

1. Admit you’ve got a problem

The first thing you need to do when you have a problem is admit to it! Stop living in denial. If you’re a procrastinator, admit you’ve got a problem. This will allow you to address the issue and work on overcoming it.

2. Calculate the cost

What are the costs, in time, money and relationships, is procrastination costing you?  Are you failing a class? Is your job at risk? Is your house a mess? Do you have overdue bills? Stop and calculate the consequences of procrastinating. This can motivate you to work on ways to fix it.

3. List and prioritize your tasks

Making and prioritizing a list is the simplest method of making sure you’re doing first things first.  By starting with your most important task you’ll not only feel a sense of accomplishment you’ll also begin to start to think of yourself as a doer. Now when something needs to get done you’ll no longer put it off simply because you don’t want to deal with it.

• Focus on one task at a time and check each task off as you complete it. Once you complete a task you can move on to the next.

• Include rewards on your to-do list. This way you have something to look forward to as you go thought you day. Just make sure that you prioritize and put the more important things ahead of your fun ones.

4. Break your tasks into bite sized pieces  

Big tasks can seem overwhelming. Break those big tasks down into their component parts. Write the big task at the top of the page and then write down all the steps needed to complete it and make those into individual tasks. This can make them seem less intimidating.

5. Eliminate distractions

There are distractions all around you, all the time. The telephone rings, a text message pings, a co-worker interrupts you with a question. If you allow them, these distractions can take away your focus and keep you from getting anything done.

• Put time in your calendar to answer phone calls or check e-mails and text messages. Ask co-workers to not disturb you during certain hours.
