Learn how to stay healthy and mentally fit!

Are you a baby boomer? If you are, then you, like me are just one of the 76.4 million people expected to turn 65 by the year 2030.

Hopefully you expect to live a long time. That means the lifestyle choices you make today play a major role in your future wellbeing.

So let me ask you, why not do everything you can to stay vital in your golden years?

I’d like to share with you habits that will keep you healthy and habits that will keep you mentally fit throughout your life.

Here’s how to stay healthy:

1. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables

Maybe you already do this and maybe you don’t. If you don’t then one of the most powerful changes you can make in your diet is to fill most of your plate with these wonderfully, tasty foods. Low in calories, fruits and vegetables are packed with the essential vitamins and nutrients you need in order to maintain a healthy body.

2. Use healthy fats

You might have heard that you need to avoid fats but your body needs fat in order to survive. In fact about one-third of your calories need to come from fat.

Since that’s the case, eat healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, and seeds. You can also eat fatty fish like tuna and salmon that are packed with omega-3s that help lower your risk of heart disease.

3. Eat breakfast

Eating breakfast put energy into your fuel tank and gets you ready for the rest of your day. It can also help you keep the weight off because eating breakfast will help you to resist junk food urges.

4. Follow a regular exercise program

A regular exercise program doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym five times a week. Just two twenty minute walks a day will go a long toward maintaining your cardiovascular health, strength, balance and flexibility and improving your longevity.

If you want, try a variety of different activities. This will keep you interested and motivated in maintaining your exercise program.

5. Maintain a healthy weight

Obesity is the world’s fifth leading risk of death in the world today. According to the World Health Organization at least 2.8 million adults die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. Not only do those extra pounds increase your risk for diabetes and other serious health issues, they drain your energy and can make life very difficult.

Note: Do not use crash diets. Not only do they not work they can be dangerous and even deadly. Find a healthy weight management plan that helps you lose the extra pounds and then keep them off.

6. Get regular health checkups

Schedule regular visits with your doctor and share all the information with them that they need to know to help you. Oh, and make sure you follow their recommendations.

7. Get plenty of sleep

While the amount of sleep needed varies from person to person a good rule of thumb is to get seven to eight hours of high quality sleep each night. Follow a sleep schedule by going to bed and getting up at the same time every day.

If you need to catch up on sleep go ahead and take a nap.

7 Habits to keep mentally fit

1. Maintain a positive viewpoint

Life’s too short to be negative. Keep focused on the bright side of life. Look around you and express gratitude for what you already have.

2. Stay connected with family and friends

Today with smart phones and computers it’s easier than ever to stay connected with people even on the other side of the world. Make it a point to visit with those close to you on a regular basis.

If you’re living alone consider getting a roommate.

3. Meet new people

Join groups that have people with similar interests. Join a club. Go out with members for coffee or shopping.

4. Volunteer

Find in local groups or a professional association that can use your skills and talents. Give a hand to a community or religious organization. Become a reading tutor for children or adults.

5. Laugh

Laugher has long been considered good medicine. So lighten up and laugh more. Watch funny movies and look for funny video clips on YouTube. Keep a sharp eye out for the humor in everything.

6. Learn something new

Learning stimulates your mind and helps to keep it mentally fit. Take an art course at the local community college or a foreign language. Keep your mind sharp by playing word puzzles or video games.
