Maybe you’d like to quit smoking and you’re thinking about quitting cold turkey.

While it is difficult to quit smoking cold turkey, it’s not impossible.There are about 7 percent of smokers that quit cold turkey.

Nicotine Addiction is NOT the Same as a Heroin Addiction

I have heard advertisements by certain companies that sell products to help people quit smoking say that nicotine is as addictive as heroin.

That’s crap! While you may have some discomfort when quitting, it’s nothing like the withdrawal symptoms from heroin.

When withdrawing from heroin an addict experiences, restlessness, severe muscle cramps and muscle and bone pain, diarrhea, tremors, panic and shallow breathing, an increased heart rate and a sharp elevation in blood pressure, nausea and/or vomiting, arrhythmia, stroke or heart attack and even convulsions.

A heroin addict can experience all of these symptoms – and more -while at the same time experience an insatiable craving for the drug.

No smoker I have ever met has ever experienced anything close to these symptoms – not ever. Don’t believe that myth.

Kicking the habit hard but you can quit smoking. If you want to break the habit, you can.

Why it is Difficult to Quit Smoking

Look, if you have been smoking for 5, 10 15, 20 or more years it can be difficult to quit.

Your brain and body have learned to crave the rush nicotine and the other additives give you. They have gotten used to this substance to being there to give them that rush and they won’t let it go so easily.

 

Make Your Decision to Quit

What I tell anybody who asks is you are on the right road when you decide you want to quit smoking.

If You Need it – Get Help

Once you make the decision it’s time to get help. While you can quit smoking cold turkey, the facts are that very few smokers quit smoking alone.

Merely admitting that you need help will go a long way to build a reliable support system for times when you need it most.

You May Experience Withdrawal Symptoms

When you quit, especially if you do it cold turkey, there is a good chance that there will be withdrawal symptoms.

Depriving your brain of nicotine can make you feel irritable and anxious. This irritability may make friends and family want to muzzle you, but if you have gotten their support in advance, telling them what you’re trying to do, they will help you get through it.

Why Some People Eat When They Quit Smoking

Smoking has as much to do with bringing your hands to your mouth as it does with the actually act of smoking.

Because of this need to do something to do with their hands, some people put food in them and then stuff it into their mouths. That’s why it’s not uncommon to see people who try to quit smoking gain a few pounds here and there.

This doesn’t have to happen to you. You just have to keep your hands busy.

Get a squeeze ball or find something else to use keep you hands busy.

Remember You Have to Quit Smoking Completely

Some people believe that you can get away with cutting back on the number of cigarettes you smoke each day.

While this can work sometimes, you are still smoking. This means when you are stressed, bored or just unhappy it is far easier to pick the habit back up again this way.

If you want to quit cold turkey you have to quit smoking completely.

Here are a few tips to help you quit smoking successfully in the long run if you decide to use the cold turkey method:

1 – Tell everybody you plan to quit

When you tell everybody you plan to quit smoking (or any other goal) it makes you accountable.

Your friends and family can lovingly encourage you when things get rough. Also, they can remind you of your commitment to quit smoking while keeping you distracted in other activities that don’t involve smoking.

2 – Leave your smoking friends behind

This can be harsh but this doesn’t mean that you have to leave them behind forever or that your friendship is completely lost. If you quit smoking cold turkey you’ll need to separate yourself from your smoking friends for at least a little while, a few weeks or maybe a couple of months.

The real problem is you have related hanging out with your smoking friends with putting a cigarette in your mouth. You need to break up that relationship and put off seeing them some future time, after you’ve quit for a while.

Just the smell of cigarettes can weaken your resolve to quit.

3 – Write down and review your reasons for quitting

Everyone who has ever set goals will tell you that when you commit them to paper, it gives them life. You are bound by them then.

Use a journal to record why you want to quit smoking. Reread those reasons 3 times a day or whenever you feel like you are having second thoughts about your decision to quit.

4 – Start an exercise program

Your exercise program can be as simple as walking or biking with a friend.

You exercise program will help you feel better a number of ways. First it will help you to detoxify.

Second, exercise releases endorphins that increase feelings of wellbeing, something you will need as you work to reach your goal to quit smoking permanently.

It’s the Best Decision you’ll Ever Make

Smoking is a habit that can shorten your life. It kills millions of people around the world every year.

This doesn’t have to be you.

Use the 4 tips above to help you leave your smoking habit behind permanently.
