How to create a more positive mental attitude!

Do you want to get more out of life? If you do, developing a more positive mental attitude will go a long way to improving the quality and, according to some medical professionals, the quantity of your life.

According to the Chicago tribune, “Research from the Harvard School of Public Health (first reported in 2001) links a more optimistic outlook with a lowered risk of heart disease in older men and University of Pittsburgh researchers report that optimistic women have less thickening of the carotid artery walls. That Women’s Health Initiative Study (first reported in 2009 in an American Heart Association journal) suggests that a positive mental outlook is associated with reduced evidence of coronary heart disease and total mortality in postmenopausal women.”

In other words, having a positive mental attitude is good for your health and life!

While nobody can guarantee that having a more positive attitude will keep you young and healthy, you can be assured that having a positive mental will go a long ways to helping you feel good about life!

Practice these strategies to develop a more positive mental attitude:

1. Be true to yourself

You’ll never be happy trying to please someone else. What you want your life to be is much more important than anyone else’s ideas, dreams, or advice for your future.

• Listen to your internal feelings. It’s your thoughts and feelings that matter.

2. Do work that calls to you

Work is one-third or more of your life. Instead of trying to “get rich” find a way to get paid for doing what makes you happy. Stop worrying about what others think of your job and do what makes you happy.

• Find work that interests you, that gets you excited and helps you grow

• To determine what kind of work fits you ask yourself, what do I love to do? Work with numbers? Paint a picture? Write children’s stories?

If you build a strategy you might be able to develop an income stream from doing those things.

3. Create options

Think about options and how you’ll be affected by choosing each one.

• By looking at new options it can actually open other options that you might have never considered. This self examination is your chance to discover how to move closer toward personal success and a more enriching life.

4. Get the training you need

Does your choice require more training or education? Do get it!

• Instead of letting your age or the excuse “I don’t have time” get in the way of additional knowledge-building, find out what options are available to you. Today there are many classes you can take on-line or at the community college that can move your forward.

5. Chose to have a positive mental attitude            

The one thing you can always choose is your attitude. Decide to wake up with a positive attitude every day.

• If challenges come up, which they always will, remember, you get to decide how you’ll handle the disaster of the moment. Focus on the solution instead of the problem. This will give you the best possible resolution.

6. Be nice to others

The Bible says, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” In other words, treat others how you’d like to be treated.

Karma says that what goes around comes around. By looking for the good in others and ignoring the less-than-positive in them you send out empathy and respect. That means the rewards you receive back will be the same or better!

7. Find a coach or mentor   

Having a role model or a coach that you honor and respect can be incredibly life-enhancing. When it comes to choosing someone you’d like to be like make sure to you dream big.

• Some people you might want to model your life like might be Nelson Mandela, Joseph Campbell, the Dalai Lama, or Billy Graham can provide you with a wonderful personal pathway to follow.

• You may choose someone local, a teacher, a person working in the field you want to move into, a relative or a clergy person or neighbor who has more love for others than you can imagine also provide beautiful examples of the person you want to be.

• Develop an image of someone who provides a direction for you to work toward and is an example of who you would like to become.

• Working with a coach can help you along this path. Many of my clients come to my San Diego office to use hypnotherapy to find clarity for their path.
