Blast Your Way through any Barrier with Positive Self Talk

You can change your life with positive self talk

How you feel about yourself – your self esteem – can vary dramatically at any one time. If you aren’t careful, input from your boss, the traffic, or a harmless comment from a co-worker can cause your self esteem to plummet, putting seemingly gigantic sized barriers in your way.

In order to make the most out of each day you need to have a way to control how you feel about yourself at any instance in time. You can do this using a simple Neuro Linguistic Programming technique known as positive self talk.

Neuro Linguistic Programming is simply a technology that uses your language and physiology to help you shift how you feel about what’s going on in your world at any one time. This can make a huge difference in the results you achieve.

Using Language to Feel Better About You

What you say to yourself can make the difference between success and failure.

For example, after making a mistake, saying “I never do anything right” you are focusing on the mistake and making it into something that it’s not, a failure.

A mistake is simply a learning opportunity. As Thomas Edison pointed out to a reporter who asked him how it felt to have failed at making the light bulb 10,000 times, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Everyone has to deal with failure. One of Neuro Linguistic Programming’s key tenants is, “There is no failure, only feedback.” What you say to your self is the feedback you give yourself.

The problem is you, like most people, are often your own worst critic. You give yourself negative feedback and tell yourself things you’d never say to anyone else, not even a stranger.

How to Treat Yourself Better

You are saying things to yourself all the time. Instead of just saying things randomly (and negatively) start saying things that lift your up! Start to look for things – even little things – that you’ve done well. Once you find them encourage and congratulate yourself.

Using positive self-talk you make yourself feel better and inoculate yourself from anything life can throw at you.

Analyze Your Self Talk

For a week, write down anything you notice that you are saying to yourself. You might hear yourself giving you disempowering feedback such as “I’ll never be able to do this!” or “I’m such a screw up!”

If you find that you are beating yourself up or generally discouraging to yourself when you make a mistake, you’ve found a major source of the negative feelings you have about yourself.

To feel better about yourself decide to erase your negative self-talk. Instead of looking down on mistakes, start seeing them as opportunities to learn and grow. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt, and start treating yourself with understanding.

If you don’t think you’re getting enough done, shift your focus over to what you have accomplished. Congratulate yourself on what you have done. This will give you the encouragement and motivation you need to try to do even more tomorrow.

Now you’ll end your day feeling proud instead of discouraged. You are moving closer to being happy and comfortable with who you are and where you are going in life.

Decide to Use Positive Self Talk

Now that you’ve identified how you are giving yourself negative feedback, it’s time to start focusing on giving yourself positive feedback. When you focus on giving yourself positive feedback you’ll be able to take advantages of the new opportunities that will present themselves.

Here’s some ways to you can use positive self talk:

1. Give Yourself Pats on the Back

When you’ve finished a project take the time to pat yourself on the back. You need to congratulate yourself when you’ve done something well. It doesn’t matter if it’s big or small as long as you’re making progress. This will help you feel good about yourself.

2. Use Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations send sparks of positive energy into your life.  An affirmation is simply a short positive statement.  As you go though your day, say them to yourself. This will lift you up and remind you what a great person you are.

• Write your affirmations in the present tense. For example, “I am finishing my projects on time” or “I weight 165 pound”.

• To get the biggest band for your buck, practice using your affirmations daily.

3. Visualize Your Success

The reason you aren’t achieving what you want is because you don’t believe that you can. Your beliefs are holding you back.

• Your beliefs are nothing but memories. Some are true and others are not.

For example, you can replace an old memory with a new belief by visualizing what you want in life. Using visualization you can motivate yourself to take the action you need to take you to success.
