Since many people gain weight after 40, I help many people over 40, using hypnotherapy and NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming, with healthy weight management. When these clients come to my San Diego office we nearly always talk about nutrition and wellness and how they relate to getting and staying healthy.

This gives them insight into how important nutrition is, to not just for losing weight, but for staying healthy for a lifetime.

Using Nutrition for Staying Healthy Over 40

Nutrition and wellness are vital to you feeling your best and remaining vital as you age. That’s why it’s important to eat a variety of healthy foods. The problem is, as you age, this can be difficult.

Here are some nutrition and wellness tips for people over 40 and a few practical strategies for eating and staying healthy.

Nutrition Basics

1. Know How Many Calories You Need and Count Them

As you age your metabolism slows down. As a result, most people require fewer calories. Your exact number will vary depending on your age, gender and activity level.

For example, if you are a sedentary woman over age 50 you need around 1,600 calories a day. If you’re a man who is very active you may need at least 2,400.

2. Stay Away from Junk Food

Junk food contains empty calories. One of the best nutrition and wellness tips you can follow is to cut out junk food.

Skip the fast food restaurants. Munch on fruits and veggies instead of potato chips and candy bars.

3. Eat Nutrient Dense Foods

Nutrient dense foods are foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains. These types of foods are essential to good nutrition and wellness and staying healthy for a lifetime.

In addition to providing you with nutrients, nutrient dense foods also provide you with the fiber you need to keep everything moving smoothly. Nutrient dense foods can also be used to lower your cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

4. Eat Healthy Fats

Eating fats is essential to your good health. Good nutrition and wellness involves eating healthy ones such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.

Staying healthy also involves limiting your saturated fats intake. These are fats that come from animals as well as the Trans fats that are found in many processed foods.

5. Eat Lean Proteins

Good nutrition and wellness involves getting your protein from lean sources like chicken and fish.  Other good sources of lean protein are eggs, low-fat and fat-free dairy products, and beans.

A good example of a source of lean protein would be a bit pot of chili. According to the CDC, one cup of dry beans contains approximately 16 g of protein, nearly enough for the whole day!

1. When Changing Your Eating Habits Involve your Doctor

Your doctor can provide you with good nutrition and wellness tips that can help you eat right while avoiding malnutrition. This is especially true if you have special conditions such as heart disease or diabetes.

Also make sure you talk to your doctor about the medications you’re taking. This is because some foods can interfere with your medications. Your doctor can give you advice on how to cope with your new diet or may even decide to change your prescription.

2. Involve your Dentist Too

Regular dental checkups are part of staying healthy. If your dentures don’t fit right or you have dental work that needs to be done it can make eating difficult.

If you have soreness in your mouth check with your dentist because proper dental care or dentures can fix any problems you’re having and will enable you to eat the foods you love.

3. Check for Food Allergies and Sensitivities

Many people find that as they age they begin to have issues with certain foods, even some that they love. If you find that you seem to be experiencing symptoms like diarrhea or gas with diary or wheat products ask your doctor to test you for food allergies. If you are experiencing a condition such as lactose intolerance, try yogurt or almond milk instead of your usual milk.

4. Outsmart Your Taste Buds

Another issue people have as they age is their taste buds change. If you find that your taste buds have changed and you now have a more intense sweet tooth, try satisfying it with a cup of sugar free cocoa or one of those healthy, low fat brownies you can find at health food stores.

You may find that you are less sensitive to salty and bitter flavors. This can cause you to want to put more salt on your foods.

If that’s the case try experimenting with spices to find out which ones stimulate your appetite.

5. Drink Plenty of Water

Good nutrition and wellness involves staying hydrated. That means drinking plenty of water, not high calories sodas or juices which will pack the pounds on, or caffeinated coffee or tea that will dehydrate you.

Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink water. A problem many people experience is as they age is their sense of thirst declines.

A good habit you can use to counteract this is to sip water or decaffeinated tea throughout the day.

6. Scale Back on the Salt

Your food contains most of the salt you need. This is especially true as you age. In fact, when you reach your 50’s you only need about 2/3 of a teaspoon of salt a day.

Good nutrition and wellness involves scaling back on your use of the salt shaker. Also, choose to opt out of processed foods and eat fresher, whole ones.

7. Make a Habit of Eating With Other People

Eating is supposed to be a community experience. Eating by yourself can cause a lack of interest in eating. This can lead to poor nutrition and wellness.

If you live by yourself join a social club or invite guests over. Studies show that we eat better when we share meals.

Nutrition and Wellness Tips If You’re in Your 60’s or Older

1. Practice Kitchen Safety

As you age your immune systems can weaken. To counter this affect you need to take extra precautions in the kitchen.

Keep all cooking surfaces clean. Separate hot and cold foods and keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Check food expiration dates.

A good food safety tip is when in doubt, throw it out.

2. Get Dialed into Community Services

If you are having issues with limited mobility or finances contact your local agency on aging. Most have services that can help you eat better. For example, Meals on Wheels will deliver food right to your door.
