Behavioral Modeling in Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Modeling in Neuro-Linguistic Programming Modeling in Neuro-Linguistic Programming first came from wanting to understand the thinking processes and behaviors of successful therapists. Using this understanding, these thinking processes and behaviors could be taught to others.

What is Behavioral Modeling?

Behavioral modeling in Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP is, in simple terms, copying behavior. The process of modeling breaks down a complex system or a series of events into chunks small enough to be understood and then reproduced.

How Does Behavioral Modeling Work?

A basic process we all use to learn behaviors is though observing and then duplicating them. NLP practitioners use this process to help change behaviors. By identifying individual elements essential to a desired behavior, a person can reproduce them.

An NLP practitioner does this by first understanding how the brain operates (neuro). Then he or she analyzes the verbal and non-verbal language patterns that are used (linguistic). Finally, she or he documents or maps a sequential set of strategies or programs (programming) of the behavior.

This is how a Neuro-Linguistic Programming practitioner teaches a behavior or skill to themselves or others. By creating a map.

Behavioral Maps

Behavioral mapping is a detailed description of the behavior. This map or model describes all the essential thoughts and actions needed to achieve results that are similar to a desired response or outcome.

Mappings Origins

Mapping was a result of Richard Bandler’s studies of the language patterns and behaviors of successful therapists. He began with Gestalt therapy founder Fritz Perls. He followed up with one of the founders of family therapy and systemic therapy, Virginia Satir.  Finally, he observed the founder of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, Milton H. Erickson, M.D.

Bandler, along with NLP co-founder John Grinder, noted the language patterns and body gestures of these very talented and skillful therapists. They found they could replicate the “magic” that these exceptional therapists were able to achieve. They did this by documenting, or mapping, their observations. Using these maps, they were able to share these skills not only with therapists, bur also ordinary people.

This became the foundation for NLP.

Practical Uses of Modeling

Behavioral modeling in Neuro-Linguistic Programming has many practical applications. For example, you can use it to model someone you admire, such as a successful spouse.  Athletes often use modeling to improve their performance.   The same goes for business leaders.

You can also use it to improve your communications by modeling a successful communicator’s behavior. You can then use NLP modeling techniques to respond the way you perceive your “model” would. This can help you to respond more calmly and positively in tense situations.

Changing Your Perception

The use of Neuro-Linguistic Programming doesn’t actually change the world, but it does change how you perceive the world. Through modeling, you can think and act as your model would rather than how you, or most people, would perceive and act on a situation.

The biggest thing is to begin using modeling now. Using modeling you’ll be better prepared to move successfully though the situations you’re bound to encounter.
