Although I only met him a couple of times I always looked to Zig Ziglar as a mentor. His books and recordings have transformed my life.

I once had the opportunity to ask the late, great Zig Ziglar how he stayed so motivated. He looked down for a moment and then looked me in the eyes and said, “I guess the motivator motivates the motivator.”

What I believe Zig was telling me was that we can’t wait for anyone else to motivate us. Motivation is a do-it-to-yourself project.  So how is it that some people stay more motivated to chase after their goals than others?

In his book, “The Psychology of Winning” Denis Waitley talks about how all of us have a goal seeking mechanism in our brains that is similar to the GPS system in a cruse missile. This mechanism can either motivate us toward or away from success.

Although not for the faint of heart, I believe the following five tips for increasing motivation can program your goal seeking mechanism for success and help you start living the life of your dreams.

1. Make Failing Painful

As legend has it, in February 1519, Hernando Cortez set sail on the final leg of his voyage from Cuba to Mexico. He had a goal to conquer Mexico so he could become a wealthy and respected man.

Arriving on the shores of Yucatan, the story goes that Cortez told his army “Burn the boats.”

They did. Cortez conquered Mexico and became a wealthy and respected man.

If you want to succeed at something you need to burn your other options. By giving yourself only one option you are forcing yourself to think about how to succeed and not how to fail.

2. Surround Yourself with Positive People

Negative people will suck the life right out of you. Take an inventory of the people in your life, get rid of the negative ones and find people to hang out with who support you and share your goals.

• If your friends are negative find some new ones, because if they don’t support you, why do you have them in your life anyway? Add friends who have what you want, and move on from the ones who aren’t supportive.

• For example, if you want to get in shape, join a martial arts class and hang out with some of the other students. They’ll be positive and supportive of your goal to get back in shape.

In fact, ask if any of them had been out of shape before they started class. There’s probably one that used to be in worse shape than you. That’s the person you want to associate with!

3. Make a Habit of Putting Positive into Your Brain Daily

Turn your car into what Brain Tracy calls “A University on Wheels” and listen to positive audio recordings while you drive to and from work. Read inspirational and motivational books as well as biographies of successful people. This will change your life.

The key is to practice this habit on a daily basis. They’ll motivate you to do the things you need to do to achieve your goals and drive you to success.

• Like exercise you can’t just do this every once and a while and expect to see significant results. Set a schedule and stick to it. Even if you just do 15 minutes a day, the payoff will be huge.

4. Do Something!

Once you’ve set a new goal don’t sit around and think about it. Take some kind of action to accomplish it – now.

Your first task can be as simple as walking around the block call or writing out an action plan. You want to do something immediately. If you procrastinate you risk falling permanently into the paralysis of analysis where you’re doing a lot of thinking but not accomplishing anything.

• Motivation follows action. A little traction can be a big inspiration and motivate you to do even more. So as soon as you’ve decided what you want to accomplish – do something.

5. Align Your Appearance with Your Aspirations

There is a Talmudic saying, “We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.” You will see things and accomplish things that are in alignment with your self perception.

• Your identity should fit your goal. As you look at yourself in the mirror ask, “Do I look like the kind of person that can accomplish my goals?”

Begin Increasing Your Motivation Today!

If you want to accomplish more, commit to your goal, surround yourself with people who will support you, fill your mind with positive information and then do something! While you’re taking action look the part.

Doing these five simple steps will increase your drive and motivation which will carry you to success. Take action daily, remove the safety nets that allow you to quit too easily and in a short time you’ll be astounded at your results.
