4 excellent benefits of meditation

“Meditation is all about the pursuit of nothingness. It’s like the ultimate rest. It’s better than the best sleep you’ve ever had. It’s a quieting of the mind. It sharpens everything, especially your appreciation of your surroundings. It keeps life fresh.”Hugh Jackman

Around the world people from a variety of religions and philosophies meditate.

Meditation is a tool used for self-help purposes. While there are many different methods, the reasons for practicing meditation are rather similar.

Many people feel they have a reasonable understanding of the practice, but most can’t really describe the actual purpose or benefits of meditation.

The following are 4 universal benefits of meditation:

1. You Rest Your Mind

Your mind jumps from one thing to another, never resting. Buddhists call it “the monkey mind”, because you’re thinking about ten different things every 15 seconds.

Your mind jumps from thinking about having a cup of coffee, to the meeting with your boss in a hour, to reminding you that you don’t have enough in you’re the bank account you pay your cell phone bill with.

You don’t fare any better in your sleep. During REM sleep, while you’re dreaming, your mind is very active and behaving the same way you do while you’re awake. It’s worrying about the same stuff you were worried about in the day, just working it out in your dreams.

While sleep is great for resting your body, it’s not nearly as useful for resting your mind.

When you’re meditating you are attempting to empty your mind of all thoughts. Many methods of meditation have you focus on one, trivial thing, concentrating on that single item or idea.

This practice is incredibly relaxing.

2. Meditation Helps You Hone Your Focus

Most people learn to meditate sitting alone in a quiet, darkened room. The reason for this is the same reason you use training wheels when learning to ride a bike, it makes learning easier.

While it’s easiest to learn to meditate under ideal conditions, you could actually be meditating most of the time as well, expanding your meditation skills to other activities. With practice your can learn to meditate and stay calm, happy, and focused no matter how busy and crazy your work day becomes.

Most people focus very poorly. Just imagine how much more you would accomplish if you could stay focused on what you’re working on. On top of that, it’s difficult to worry when you’re controlling your thoughts.

3. Meditation Helps You Find Solutions

When your mind is flying around like Happy Potter on a broomstick, it’s very difficult to find a solution to your challenges. In order to solve your life’s issues, your brain needs space.

One of the best benefits of meditation is it can provide that space.

Do you find that many of your best ideas some in the shower, or while you’re doing something that occupies your mind in a rather mindless way? Activities like mowing the grass, vacuuming the house or driving down the freeway are great for coming up with solutions. These activities allow your mind wander a little.

Meditation is similar.

4. Meditation Improves Your Health

Stress is epidemic in modern society and is incredibly hard on the body. Meditation can reduce the effects of stress by lowering your heart rate and blood pressure, and improving sleep.

In a Huffington Post article titled, ‘Meditation Health Benefits: What The Practice Does To Your Body’, Meredith Melnick writes, “Studies show that meditation is associated with improvement in a variety of psychological areas, including stress, anxiety, addiction, depression, eating disorders and cognitive function, among others. There’s also research to suggest that meditation can reduce blood pressure, pain response, stress hormone levels and even cellular health.”

In short, meditation is very beneficial to your health.
