How are you using your imagination?

Hypnosis and NLP both contain very powerful tools for someone wanting to build self confidence. Many clients come to my San Diego office wanting to learn how to use these tools just for that purpose. One of theses tools is creative visualization.

What is Creative Visualization?

My definition of creative visualization is the positive use of the imagination. Notice I said the positive use of the imagination.

Everyone uses their imagination. Most people use their imagination negatively.

For example, you have an important meeting scheduled. As you think about the meeting you think about everything that could go wrong. You stress out about if you wore the right clothes or what the other people are thinking about you. As a result the meeting goes poorly.

This is using your imagination negatively. You are imagining failure and not success.

Creative visualization, on the other hand, is using your imagination in a positive manner. Using the same example you review past meetings where things went well. You remember having good rapport and coming to a successful conclusion.

This is using your imagination positively to build your self confidence allowing you to get the result you desire.

Using Past Successes to Build Your Self Confidence

Let’s take a look at how you can use creative visualization to build your self confidence.

1. Remember a time in your life where you felt completely confident.

Maybe this was a time in school when you got the best grade in the class or at a specific sporting event when you scored the winning point or when you stood up for yourself. This allows you to begin to re-live the feelings of self confidence.

2. Fully associate yourself into this event.

As you re-live this experience, completely immerse yourself in what you see, what you hear and what you feel. Allow yourself to experience what it was like to be completely confident.

3. Use your imagination to enhance the scene.

Use creative visualization to adjust the sub-modalities of the scene. This might be making this scene bigger and brighter. You might adjust the sounds to be louder, softer or clearer or with a different rhythm. You might move the feeling in your body or change the feeling it gives you from cool to hot or prickly to smooth.

As you adjust each of these note how it affects your confidence. If a certain adjustment helps to build your self confidence – great – you now know how to build your self confidence in the future. If you notice that an adjustment reduces your self confidence – great – you now know what to avoid to remain self confident in the future.

3. Anchor Your State

Now anchor this state or experience by touching a spot on your arm or leg that you wouldn’t normally touch, perhaps the inside of your elbow or the back of your knee. You can also anchor the experience by pumping your arm twice into the air and saying “yes”. Use any anchor that works for you.

What’s key is to make the anchor something unique that you associate with experiencing self confidence.

4. Test your anchor

Try to put yourself into the same state you were in when you were experiencing a lack of confidence. Now fire your anchor by touching yourself where you set the anchor. If you’ve set it correctly you’ll feel an instantaneous change of state into a feeling of self confidence.

If your anchor doesn’t work go through steps 1 to 3 until firing your anchor puts you in the state you wish to be in.
