What is Hypnosis?

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis has been used by billions of people for thousands of years. It has been shown to work to reduce stress, improve sleep, reshape your body, relieve pain or eliminate bad habits like smoking and overeating.

While many people think of it as something exotic, hypnosis is actually a perfectly normal state that everybody has experienced. One example of a natural hypnotic state is what is known as “highway hypnosis” or being hypnotized by the road as you drive. When you arrive at your destination you don’t remember driving or even remember seeing the usual landmarks. Your mind was in a hypnotic trance, leaving your driving to your ‘automatic pilot’.

This same, natural hypnotic state also exists when you become so involved in a book, movie, TV show or any other activity where you block out everything else. You’re so involved in what you’re are doing that, when someone comes into the room and tries to talk to you, you don’t see or hear them. This is also a natural hypnotic state. Whenever you concentrate that strongly, you automatically slip into this natural hypnotic state.

The word “hypnos” is a Greek word that literally means “to sleep”.  But hypnosis is very different from sleep. It’s nothing like sleep because your mind is alert the whole time.

A hypnotic state is characterized by extreme suggestibility, relaxation and a heightened imagination. It is often compared to daydreaming, or the feeling of “losing yourself” in a book or movie. You are fully conscious, but you tune out most of the stimuli around you.

While the hypnotic state, by itself, is only useful for the relaxation it produces, its real importance is your mind is open and receptive to suggestions for healing and emotional change.

That’s because, once your mind is open, you can begin to shift the way you think about an aspect of your life you want to change. By shifting the way you think about something, such as an addition or phobia, you can shift the way you behave when presented with it in the future.
