Positive Self-talk and Healthy Weight Management

“The only difference between the best performance and the worst performance is the variation in our self-talk and the self-thoughts and attitudes we carry around with us.” – Dr. Dorothy Harris

Do you make jokes about your weight? Do you make fun of your huge butt or thunder thighs?

If you do you may want to rethink how you talk to yourself.

Fat talk backfires; anyway that’s what psychologists at Notre Dame University concluded after a recent study on college aged women.

Women in the study were asked to rate women who were engaging in negative fat talk as well as women who were talking about their bodies in a positive manner.

The women in the study concluded that the subjects who made positive comments about their body and weight were much more likeable.

Positive Self-talk and Healthy Weight Management

A healthy self image, accepting your body will result in higher self esteem and more approval from others.

Exchanging fat talk for  positive self talk can help you change your self image and your life.

The Benefits of Creating Positive Self Talk Statements about Your Body

1. Drive up your self-esteem.

When you start giving yourself positive self talk about your body image you’ll become more popular with others.  You’ll also start liking yourself better.

Learn to separate your self-worth from your dress size.

2. You’ll Take Better Care of Yourself

Positive self talk will help you appreciate your true value.

Once you start to see yourself differently you’ll behave differently. This will help you gain self confidence.

Your self confidence might even spur you on to ask for a raise or apply for a new position.

3. You’ll Become More Interesting

What do people who focus on food talk about?

That’s right, food.

Look there’s much more to talk about in life than how many calories are in a Big Mac.

Instead of focusing on food stay up with the latest world news and cultural events or read books that you have an interest in.

4. You’ll Become a Positive Talker

Negative fat talk is contagious. So is positive self talk.

By staying away from fat talk you inoculate others from falling victim of  it too.

When You Find Yourself Using Negative Fat Talk Follow these Tips

1. Ask yourself “Is this true?”

Why are you using the negative fat talk? What do you accomplish by putting yourself down?

If you’re looking for attention, learn to juggle chainsaws.

If you need some sympathy ask a friend to listen, set a time limit, then promise yourself not to talk about it until your next appointment.

2. Ask yourself, “Why do I feel this way?”

Instead of focusing on feeling fat, get in touch with your underlying thoughts and emotions.

What you may find is you are angry or unhappy with something in your life.

3. Ask yourself, “What is beauty anyway?”

Did you know that Julia Roberts once said she was a fat cow? Because of the culture we live in, women of all sizes are prone to fat talk.

When you start your fat talk go back to tip 1. You’ll probably find that you are a lot more attractive than you realize.

Instead of thinking about your weight, focus on your best features.

4. Decide to Follow a Health Weight Management Plan

Instead of stressing about your weight, take the action needed to take charge of it.

Although it’s not going to be easy at first, make a commitment to incorporate a workout into your day and to eat healthy meals.

While you cannot do a thing about what you weight today, by taking action today you can take control of your health tomorrow and every day for the rest of your life.

And don’t do it only to look better, do it to be healthier. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of diabetes and other serious health issues.
