Are diet pills safe?

“I told my doctor I get very tired when I go on a diet, so he gave me pep pills. Know what happened? I ate faster.”Joe E. Lewis

People in the U.S. spend over $99 Billion on weight loss diets and gadgets.

One of the largest areas of the weight loss industry is diet pills. Diet pill companies claim they have safe diet pills that can help you lose weight quickly and without any effort.

But this simply isn’t true.

There is no such thing as completely safe diet pills because in addition to harmful side effects, diet pills can become both physically and emotionally addictive.

How Diet Pills Work

There are many different types of diet pills.

Some have active ingredients like phenylpropanolamine or caffeine that act as appetite suppressants.

Others claim to increase your metabolism while controlling your appetite.

Still others claim to block your body’s ability to absorb fat.

Some work by expanding in your stomach to create a full sensation, claiming to give you similar results to bariatric gastric banding surgery without the operation.

Last, but not least, some diet pills are based on the process of eliminating waste or fluid from the body. Many include some form of diuretic or laxative which, of course, can help you to lose water weight.

The Dangers of Diet Pills

One of the most dangerous facts about over the counter diet pills is that they are not required to be tested by the FDA before being released to the public. While they are not regulated, if a product has been shown to be dangerous the FDA will act to remove a product from the market.

This is what happened to products containing ephedrine in 2003. The FDA banned Ephedra products after they were suspected of being at least partly responsible for the death of a prominent athlete.

Another major problem is since these pills can be purchased over the counter as well as by prescription, it’s up to the buyer to make sure they understand how to use the pills. Then they must use the pills as they were intended.

A problem many people have is they try to speed up their weight loss by taking too many diet pills. This can lead to them experiencing an overdose.

Diet Pills Side Effects

Addiction, both physical and psychological, is one of the greatest diet pill side effects.

It’s’ very important to consult your physician before taking any kind of diet pill if you have any preexisting health problems.

Before taking any diet pills make sure that you understand any and all possible side effects. Stop taking the diet pills immediately if you experience any of them.

Some known side effects of diet pills even when used “properly” include:

  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Irritability, insomnia and a feeling of restlessness or hyperactivity
  • High blood pressure
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Heart palpitations
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke or congestive heart failure
  • Digestive tract problems like vomiting, diarrhea, constipation or other stomach pain
  • Fever
  • Dry mouth
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Profuse sweating
  • Hair loss
  • Menstrual cycle and sex drive disturbances and
  • Urinary tract problems

Diet pills can cause also cause side effects like tremors or convulsions, confusion or hallucinations, breathing problems, renal failure or heart attack when overused.

Emotional Dangers of Diet Pills

In addition to the physical risks diet pills have emotional dangers.

Some people become emotionally dependent on the pills.

After experiencing initial success they inaccurately attribute their entire success to their to diet pills. They forget the food modifications they’ve made, the exercise programs they began or other lifestyle changes that may have contributed to their weight loss.

Another problem is that people will often ‘pill hop’.

When one diet pill doesn’t give them the results they want they try one new diet pill after the other, looking for the magic cure that will let them continue to eat whatever they want but still lose weight.

These people probably still believe in Santa Claus too.

Healthy Weight Management

There are no safe diet pills, in fact, there is absolutely no pill of any kind that will cause the lifestyle and emotional changes you need to live a long and healthy life.

To really lose weight you need to follow a healthy weight management plan that includes a balanced, sensible diet and an exercise program.

Do it for life!
