Tips to Lose Weight

Are you overweight? If you are it’s because of your habits, the way you regularly approach eating and exercise.

If you reach for a candy bar when you’re stressed it’s because you have developed a habit of reaching for a candy bar when you have a stress trigger. If you go home and sit in front of the TV and eat junk food instead of exercising it’s because you have made a habit of sitting in front of the TV and eating junk food.

Because you’re doing these habits automatically they can feel like they are out of your control but, if you really want to lose weight, there are some things you can do to instill better, healthier habits and shed those extra pounds.

Here’s how to structure your eating habits to get back on track:

1. Make and follow an eating schedule

Many people eat mindlessly, grabbing stuff to shove in their mouths whenever the urge hits them. If you keep track, you’ll be surprised by how many extra calories you’re actually shoving into your mouth throughout the day.

A better habit is to schedule designated times for your meals and snacks each day. This way you won’t be mindlessly shoving junk into your mouth.

2. Eat your meals sitting down

Instead of eating standing up or in front of your computer or TV, sit down at the table and focus on eating your dinner. You can make eating your meal more appealing by placing a simple centerpiece of fresh fruit, cut flowers, or pine cones on your table.

3. Eat with others

One of the best things you can do for your family’s unity is to eat as a family. You also give your children a good example as you eat a meal filled with lots of fresh vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

If you don’t have other people in your family to eat with, invite friends over to enjoy a meal with you a few times a week.

4. When you’re done eating get up from the table

When you’re done eating get up and start putting the dishes in the sink. This will keep you from putting that extra helping up mashed potatoes on your plate. Wrap up the leftovers immediately and put them away in the refrigerator or freezer.

5. Turn off the TV and other electronic distracters

Turn off your TV, tablet or any other electronic devices and make mealtime about eating and conversation.

6. Keep track of what you eat

You can write down what you eat or keep it on an app in your Smartphone or tablet. I personally use MY Fitness Pal because it’s free but they all work about the same. Research shows that keeping track of what you eat is one of the best ways to resist temptation.

7. Learn about good nutrition

If you want to lose weight, knowing what to eat is very important. If you’re unsure consult with a dietician or go to the bookstore and pick up a book on nutrition.

8. Plan your meals in advance

Every weekend, plan your meals for the upcoming week. This will keep you from mindlessly reaching for the fist thing that comes to mind when you come home. Find a healthy cookbook, buy the required ingredients and leave the junk food behind.

Other Habits to Structure if You Want to Lose Weight

1. Your sleep

Not sleeping enough can cause you to gain weight. When you get enough sleep you body operates more efficiently. Make a regular sleep schedule and stick to it.

2. Your exercise

You need to exercise if you want to lose weight. If you haven’t exercised for a while try adding 15 minutes of exercise a day to begin with. Just get into the habit of doing more with your body.

3. Your loved ones

Make time for your personal relationships. A busy life can make it tough to stay in touch with friends and family members. Schedule time in your calendar to spend with the people that you are about and want to stay close to.

4. Your relaxation

You also need to take the time to relax. Develop some relaxing routines like listening to gentle, instrumental music, drinking your morning coffee out on the balcony or sitting quietly in your garden.

Adopt these Habits to Help You Lose Weight

If you’re overweight it is because of the habits you’ve adopted over the years.

If you want to lose weight adopt a few of these new, healthy habits. Within a short time you’ll have more energy and look great. You’ll also be healthier.

All’s it takes is a few new, healthy habits.
