Why Diets Don’t Work

When people come to my San Diego office for help with losing weight using Neuro Linguistic Programming and hypnotherapy weight loss techniques I ask, “What in the past have you done to lose weight?”

Almost always the answer is “I’ve tried dieting.”

While a healthy diet is important in any healthy weight management program, there are problems with dieting.

Why Diets Don’t Work

The very word “diet” is depressive to most people. The worst part about “dieting” is that it means giving up foods that are satisfying and enjoyable to you.

Remember – what you resist –persists!

Just consider this scenario. You’re sitting a party nibbling on celery sticks while other people are eating the crab puffs. People laugh while eating cheesecake as you take a big bite of cauliflower.

That doesn’t sound like fun, does it?

So what do you do? What every other person who is ‘dieting” would do. You reach for a crab puff, after all one won’t hurt, will it?

The Big Problem with Dieting

The biggest problem with dieting is that you’re not eating the way you’ll eat for the remainder of your life. You consume foods you might not like a great deal and don’t find at all comforting.

If you’re determined enough, you stick with it till you reach your goal. But you know this is “just for the diet” instead of finding healthier foods you like in amounts that don’t induce weight gain.

A diet like this just won’t last.

Why Dieting Makes You Feel Bad

Dieting can make you feel stripped, alienated and alone, except around others who are dieting.

That, by the way, is why diet companies that sell diet food programs have support groups. They work – as long as you stay part of the group.

While dieting you might stop socializing because food is such a big part of how most people interact with acquaintances and loved ones.

Other problems with dieting are when you finally give up and go back into the world of happy unrestrained eating you feel bad about yourself for overeating. At the same time you carry all those damaging feelings toward healthier “diet foods” that you picked up while “dieting”

A Diet is a Life-style, Not an Event

Instead of thinking about “going on a diet” a better way to think about dieting is the way the Greeks defined it in their word diaita which means “a way of life, mode of living.”

In other words you need to shift the way you think about eating. You are adapting a different lifestyle.

Healthy Weight Management

Experts agree that instead of focusing on a weight loss diet it’s better to focus on long term healthy weight management. This includes a healthy diet and an exercise program.

The long term results of diet and exercise are that you’ll be dropping off a little weight at a time instead of yo-yoing. You’ll lose weight and keep it off and look and feel healthy for the rest of your life.

Do it for life!
