How to enjoy exercising to lose weight

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” – Jim Rohn

You want to get back into shape, build a little muscle and lose a little fat. You want to feel healthier and more proud of your body.

You know in order to look and feel better you’ll need to turn exercising into a regular habit so you join a gym, walk with a friend or start playing tennis again. But it’s hard to get to the gym, your friend bails on you or you find that tennis is just too much work.

So what do you do? You quit.

So how do those fanatics motivate themselves to exercise so much? What’s their secret?

While you might think they have superior willpower, for most people willpower isn’t a long-term solution.

If you want to make exercising to lose weight a habit try using these strategies:

1. Visualize What You Want to Look Like

In order to get what you want, you need to know where you’re going. That means you need to know exactly what you want to look like.

How much weight do you want to lose? What size pants or dress do you want to fit in? What are you going to look like when you’re done?

• One of the things I teach my San Diego clients is how to use hypnotherapy to visualize their ideal body image. Once you know what you want to look like it’s much easier to motivate you to exercise, especially when the going gets tough.

• Put a photo of how you want to look on your bathroom mirror or your refrigerator so you can see them when you go to the bathroom or every time you think about reaching in the refrigerator for that snack.

2. Find a Time that Works for You

Maybe you like your evenings free. If so, schedule your exercise program first thing in the morning or at lunch.

You might struggle with just scheduling the time. If you do, you might exercise for 15 minutes in the morning and walk for 20 or 30 minutes at lunch or in the evening.

Decide what time is best for you.

3. Develop an Exercise Plan

Your plan should focus on your desired outcome, the body image you want. Put your plan in your schedule along with the exercises you’ll perform, and the number of sets or repetitions or the number of minutes you’ll walk.

• To keep you from setting yourself up for failure make sure your plan is something you can stick to.

• Remember that your plan is your path to success. An addition benefit is your plan will strengthen your confidence.

4. Find a Partner to Exercise With

If possible find an experienced, committed workout partner. By finding a serious workout partner you’re more likely to continue with your plan.

• Having someone to walk with can make the time go by and make your walk a lot more fun.

• An additional benefit is you’ll have someone to hold you accountable.

5. Focus on Your Why

When you have a day that you struggle to exercise, focus on all the wonderful benefits you’ll gain by developing a strong exercise habit.

You’re going to look and feel better. You’re going to be healthier. You’ll be around longer for your loved ones.

Focus on that image on the days when you find motivating yourself to exercise gets tough.

• Keep a photo of yourself of how you look when you start somewhere you can see it and then check out how much you’ve changed. Seeing positive changes in your appearance can help you stay motivated.

• Having success in this area of your life can translate into successes in other areas of your life too.

Use these Tips to Make Exercising to Lose Weight a Habit

There will be days that you don’t feel like exercising but if you use these tips you can learn to make exercise fun.  Then as you exercise more the habit becomes stronger and more enjoyable.

It’s a lot easier to make something a habit when it’s fun and if you’ll use these tips for just 30 days, exercise will begin to solidify into a habit you enjoy.

Now instead of seeing exercising as a chore you’ll be having fun enjoying all the benefits exercise can bring to your life.

Do it for life!
