Your daily thoughts, how you habitually think, will either add or subtract from your happiness. While nobody consciously chooses to be unhappy you can cause yourself a lot of misery by allowing poor thinking habits to control your mind.

But finding happiness doesn’t have to be hard. You can find happiness simply by eliminating a few bad habits from your daily life.

Take a look at the following bad habits and if you find that they are part of your life make every effort to eliminate them.  

  1. Trying to get too much done in too little time

One bad habit that blocks happiness is having unreasonable timelines. While nearly any goal is possible, if you don’t give yourself enough time to accomplish it you can make yourself very unhappy. Since most people underestimate the time needed to accomplish

their goals make sure that your timeline is reasonable.

  • If you have an overly optimistic estimation of a timeline for completing a task or goal you will feel down and maybe even defeated when you fail to attain your goal on schedule.
  1. Not letting go of past hurts

From time to time people are going to hurt us. Now you can either decide to let it go or you can continue to hold a grudge. The problem with not letting go of hurts is that it focuses you thinking on past negative events. This will create unhappy feelings inside you that will become obvious to everyone you meet.

  • Holding on to past hurts is always worse for the person holding the grudge. In fact, the person that you’re holding a grudge against might not even know – or care – that you are mad at them!
  • Let go of your negative feelings toward others. If you are holding a grudge think of these wise words by Confucius, “To be wronged is nothing, unless you continue to remember it.”
  1. Not staying in the present

You’ll have a hard time finding happiness if you spend too much time in the past or future. This is especially true if your focus is on regrets or fears.

  • Instead of regretting the past think about what you learned and then move on. Instead of worrying about what might happen in the future decide on what you can do today to create the future you want!
  • You can only learn from the past. The only place you can do anything about the future in here in the present. Staying present makes finding happiness much easier.
  1. Being a victim

Instead of taking responsibility our society likes to embrace the victim mentality. Stop making excuses. Instead of trying to justify your current circumstances decide to break free of them.

  • While you may have had some unfortunate circumstances in your life you can either decide to let them control you or you can decide to take responsibility for your life and work your way out of them.
  • Once you take responsibility for your life you are telling the universe that you are a powerful person and that you can succeed. Countless individuals have overcome incredible odds. You can certainly be among them!
  1. Trying to be someone else

Stop trying to be like everyone else. You are a priceless masterpiece filled with a unique set of talents, skills, and experiences. Avoid comparing yourself to others. The only person you need to compare yourself with is yourself.

  • Other people are successful in as much as they can efficiently and effectively use their unique talents and skills. How are you managing your talents and skills? If you’re not doing everything possible then get busy and make some changes.
  1. Fearing failure

When asked what it felt like to have failed 10,000 times to make the light bulb, Thomas Edison answered, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

If you learn from failure, what doesn’t work, you have not failed, you have learned. While nobody likes to fail we all can learn from it. If you think about why you failed you can, like Thomas Edison, apply the knowledge to your future attempts.

  • While failure can be a great tool for moving toward success, repeating the same errors will provide the same results. It’s important to make adjustments so that you can change failure into a learning opportunity.
  1. Not being grateful

I recently read that people in poor countries are actually more grateful than people in richer countries – even the United States!             A lack of gratitude will certainly scuttle your happiness.

Remember, even in the darkest hour things are rarely as bad as they seem. Take out time on a regular basis to remind yourself of what you can be grateful for. Use spare moments and write down things that fill you with feelings of gratitude. This will put you on the smooth path toward finding happiness.

  1. Settling for low standards

Your life will be a direct reflection of the standards you set for yourself. If you set low standards you will get low results but if you set high standards you can get high results. While stretching yourself can feel uncomfortable you’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment once you reach those higher standards.

  • Always remember you are unique and capable. You deserve a wonderful life. You can do this by increasing your expectations. Stop settling for less.

Stop Letting these Bad Habits Block Your Happiness

Finding happiness is within your reach. You don’t have to let these bad habits block your success anymore.

By identifying and eliminating you counterproductive habits you can bring happiness into your life. Use this list to help you improve the quality of your habits and you’ll begin to experience a life full of happiness and success. Remember – you deserve it!
