If you go down the street and randomly ask people what they want in life, the answer you’ll often get is “I just want to be happy”.

The funny thing is that even though that’s what most people say they want, very few people actually can tell you what it means to be happy.

Do you know what’s really funny? Most people who are happy will tell you they aren’t seeking happiness.

While this may seem counterintuitive at first, if you take a look at the common traits of happy people, they all seem to have a similar pattern to living their lives.

People who are happy are happy not as a result of chasing after happiness but they are happy because of the actions they take.

Stop taking the good things in your life for granted and don’t tell me your life doesn’t have any good things!

You probably have a car, a roof over your head plenty of food to eat. There are probably also many other aspects of your life, such as having access to an education and health care system that a majority of the people on this planet could only dream of.

• People who are happy seem to be contented with what they have and where they are in life.

• Developing an attitude of gratitude requires nothing more than a shift in the way you look at life. Instead of trying to change your circumstances change the way you think about them.

• A simple way of developing an attitude of gratitude is making a point of reflecting on everything that you’re grateful for at least once a day. A perfect time to do this is as you fall asleep at night.

This does two things for you. First it helps you to brush your cares away allowing you to fall into restful slumber. Second it prepares your subconscious mind for a great day tomorrow

2. Set realistic goals

Very few people ever experience overnight success.

While if you are talented you might get a chance for fame and fortune on “American Idol” or “The Voice”, even those people don’t experience success overnight. Most have prepared for a few years and some for even decades before experiencing success.

When you set unrealistic goals you set yourself up for disappointment. On the other hand, happy people are realistic and pragmatic when it comes to setting and achieving their goals.

• Happy people understand that you need to be realistic about the time and effort needed to achieve your goals.  They also understand that when you fall short, you need to reevaluate and shift your approach. Then put your effort into the additional work you need to reach your goal.

• One of the easiest ways for finding happiness is to understand you’re just not going to achieve all the goals you set for yourself, no matter how much work you put into them. There can be outside factors that affect your outcome. Learn from it and go on.

Remember, finding happiness is in the journey, not the goal

3. Stay focused on Other People’s Needs

Some of the happiest people in the world are those who put the needs of others first. For example, the Dalai Lama seems to be focused on how to make the world and the lives of others better.
