How to Supercharge Your Self Confidence

You can overcome the fear of failure

Are you bogged down by the fear of failure? The fear of failure can suck you in, holding you back from living the life of your dreams.

Maybe you want to make a change because you’re not happy with your current situation, but the fear of failure holds you back from making meaningful changes your life.

While you consciously know all the reasons you should take action, your subconscious mind keeps reminding you up of all the reasons why you can’t move forward.

It’s that fear of failure that grabs you by the ankles and pulls you into the quicksand of defeat, even before you begin.

What Do You Fear?

That fear of failure might be a manifestation of the fear of being judged or criticized like you were when you came up with that wrong answer in math class when you were 12 years old. Or you might be afraid that you are wasting your time on something that won’t work out like that time you tried to put that business together right out of college but then you had to focus on your new job and the dream just slipped away.

The fear of failure can bubble up from your subconscious mind and prevent you from discovering your true capabilities.

If you think the fear of failure is holding you back you can use the following concepts to supercharge your self confidence:

1. Failure isn’t final

I was listening to a recording by Dr. Joe Vitale and he quoted a billionaire who had struggled mightily before achieving success. In fact this billionaire had gone bankrupt at least three times before achieving great financial success.

When asked about what he had learned about failure, Dr. Vitale quoted this billionaire as saying “The interesting thing about failure is nothing bad happens.”

What this billionaire was telling us is that as long as you are willing to give it one more try, failure isn’t final. You can come back from even from what seems to be the most devastating catastrophe.

• Henry Ford failed in business and went broke five times before he finally got his automobile company off the ground.

2. You make up your fears

Did you know that there are only two fears children have naturally? These are the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. All other fears are learned. They are made up in your mind.

No child fears failure. If they did no child would ever learn to walk let alone ride a bike. The fear of failure is something you’ve made up in your mind.

• Just as you fell many times before you could walk, you’ll also probably “fall” as you attempt to do things you haven’t done before. Instead of becoming fearful, learn to enjoy the process of seeing just how far you can take something.

3. There is no failure, only feedback

This is a basic tenant of Neuro Linguistic Programming. Instead of thinking “that was a failure”, think, “what did I learn from that?”

• When asked by a reporter how it felt to have failed to make the light bulb. Thomas Edison replied, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Edison understood that one of the best ways to figure out what works is to figure out what doesn’t work.

• You will succeed as long as you learn from what didn’t work. When you continue to try it’s just a matter of applying what you’ve learned to develop a better solution.

4. What will your life be like if you don’t try?

Ask yourself, “How will I feel if I don’t try?”

What stories will you have missed out on, what people you will never meet. What places will you never visit?

Yes what you are attempting may be hard but is it any harder than staying where you are right now?

• When asked, most seniors will tell you they regret most the things they never tried, not the things at which they didn’t succeed.

5 What’s the worst thing that could happen?

When the fear of failure hits you in the face ask yourself, “What’s the worst thing that could happen?”

Then, once you’ve figured out what’s the worst thing that could happen, figure out if you could live with it. If you can, then go for it!

• By asking yourself this question you can prepare a contingency plan for the worst possible outcome.

Use These Tips to Supercharge Your Self Confidence

Failure is a natural part of life; it doesn’t have to be feared. If you’ll utilize these tips you’ll be able to forge ahead, despite your fears.

What you’ll find is that by taking action, you’ll be able to overcome the fear of failure and build the life of your dreams.
