7 Tips to Help You Banish Your Fear of Failure

Fear of Failure

Does the Fear of Failure Hold You Back?

“Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.”Winston Churchill

I really like that quote. It’s what all successful people do. On the other hand unsuccessful people experience failure and then, as a result, are hesitant to try new things.

Why do people have a fear of failure?

They experience failure and then the constant nagging thought of “What if I fail again?” hinders their efforts.

In fact, many of the clients that come to my San Diego office to use hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques come as a result of a fear of failure they acquired from past events that didn’t come out the way they wanted them to.

They have learned that trying can equal failure.

That’s true.

What’s also true is you can never accomplish anything without trying.

But as Susan Jeffers writes in her great book, ‘Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway’ – “The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out and do it.” She’s absolutely right (and by the way I highly recommend reading her book) you don’t have to have a fear of failure. Instead you can embrace failure and let it propel you to success.

How Oprah Winfrey Overcame Failure

You Can Overcome the Fear of Failure

Did you know that Oprah Winfrey was fired from her television reporting job? She was told that she wasn’t fit to be on screen.

As you probably already know Oprah learned from this failure and then became the undisputed queen of television talk shows and is a household name.

She also became a billionaire.

She often credits her “failure” as the catalyst that spurred her on to her amazing success.

Like Oprah you’ll probably experience very powerful feelings after a perceived failure. And like Oprah it’s your perception about your failure that will determine your future success.

How to Change Your Fear of Failure

“We don’t fail. We try, and improve with feedback.”Major Presupposition of Neuro Linguistic Programming

Failing at something doesn’t mean YOU are a failure.

If you change the way you look at a failure you can make it a learning or positive event.

What if you could change your perception of failure into a positive image instead of a negative one? How could this benefit you?

Let’s talk about seven benefits you can receive from failing if you have a positive outlook:

1. You Get New Results

As new people enter your life and as new items are invented you’ll need to try and do new things. Just remember, the first time you try something new it might not work out.

That’s okay.

Focus on how your new experiences will benefit you in the future.

2. You Get Wiser

You go out to meet a new person at a coffee shop that you met on an on-line dating service.

Although you wanted it to, it doesn’t quite work out.  However, the person gently pointed out a personality flaw you weren’t aware of.

You think about it and decide to change your behavior to get rid of that slight quirk. •What’s important is to ask yourself what you learned from any less-than-successful event.

3. You Get to Know Yourself Better

Let’s say you try to salvage a previous relationship.

As you go through this process you realize that you’re always the one making concessions to keep the relationship intact.

You are the one making sacrifices to keep your partner around. By recognizing your disempowering behavior you can now do something about it.

• Although these lessons are often painful, remember they are worth it.

For example since your last break-up, you’ve been more in touch with what you truly want. This will lead to better communications with your new partner. This is a discovery that will lead to richer, more fulfilling relationships.

4. You Find the People who are Really on Your Side

Failures can drive people out of your life.  Other people, your real friends, will go through your “failures” with you and will encourage you.

You both grow from the experience. • Your “failure” actually helps you determine who your real friends are.

5. You Find Out What’s Really Important

We all strive to determine what matters to us and when you experience failure, you can sometimes discover what’s most important in your life.

Often you’ll find that those things that are the most important are things that are free.

Things like your health, your family and friends. • Arriving at this realization can be invaluable from this moment on.

6. You’ll Probably Get a Second Chance

If you work on figuring out the lesson of the “failure” you can always get a second chance.

The reason most people don’t succeed is they don’t learn from their failures.

You can’t succeed unless you acknowledge your mistakes and then figure out what the lesson is.

• Plus correcting your mistake will make you feel amazing. Knowing that you were able to rectify a previous misstep will boost your self confidence and give you a bushel full of personal satisfaction.

7. You’ll be Able to Make Better Decisions

A very successful and wealthy man was asked “How have you become so successful?”

He smiled and answered, “Good Decisions.”

“How did you learn to make good decisions?”

He smiled again and then said, “Bad decisions.”

This is a great lesson for everyone, everyone makes bad decisions, and it’s what you learn from those decisions that make you successful.

The great thing about a “failure” is when a similar incident comes up you’ll think “Been there, done that, this time I’ll get it right.”

Stop Fearing Failure

Did you know that J.K. Rowling was a failure?

She was an unemployed, divorced mother, raising her daughter on social security.

Then she decided to write “Harry Potter”. You might of heard of it. J.K. Rowling is no longer considered a failure; in fact she is an internationally renowned for her seven-book Harry Potter series and is the first female billionaire author.

She didn’t let past failures hold her back. Making mistakes can actually be helpful if you have the right mindset.

They give you feedback about yourself and the challenges you face. This feedback gives you the directions you need to proceed with your life.

Use those past less than fruitful experiences. Let yourself grow from them.

Then you’ll no longer have the fear of failure, you’ll have acquired the essence of success!
