Improving Your Life with Self Hypnosis

As a master NLP Practitioner and Hypnotist I am very aware of the power that hypnosis has in helping people achieve their goals and dreams. In fact the reason I started my practice in San Diego of helping people with advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic programming or NLP was because of the many benefits I’ve personally received.

How I Was Introduced to Hypnosis

Way back in the early 1980’s I was attending the University of San Diego. While there I met a fellow student who was a professional hypnotherapist. Up to this time I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a professional hypnotist. I went to a few sessions with her and she recommended some books to me which I read. Since then I’ve read hundreds of books and articles about hypnosis.

How I was introduced to NLP

A few years later I was introduced to Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP in Tony Robins’ book, “Unlimited Power” and in an audio course through Nightingale Conant. I found NLP to be fascinating and began using it to help myself and then my martial arts students perform at the highest level possible.

As a result of my years of practice and study I have become very proficient at using these wonderful tools to help people to make significant shifts win their thinking that, in turn, makes big differences in their lives.

Self Hypnosis

Although my initial introduction to hypnosis was with a professional hypnotherapist, after learning the basics of hypnosis I found that I could actually use self hypnosis to receive excellent results. You can experience self hypnosis by listening to recordings or you can talk yourself through the process.

Self hypnosis is a do it to your self project. It is done without a trained professional, but uses the same techniques that a hypnotist or hypnotherapist would.

You can use self hypnosis for the same things you go to a professional hypnotherapist. These are things like reducing your stress, falling to sleep at night or altering your feelings about food and exercise and becoming fitter.

An Alternative to Drugs

As a society we have been trained to turn to drugs when we have a ‘problem.” This is especially true when people want to reduce their stress or lose weight. They want a “quick fix” and take the latest pharmaceuticals.

While pill popping can be very effective in the short run, they do nothing for the underlying causes of your stress or fitness and studies show that they can be very harmful if taken for a long period of time. So, unless you have a specific medical condition that necessitates you using drugs, for your long term health I highly recommend that you stay away from them.

How to Use Self Hypnosis

In order to use self hypnosis effectively you need to do two things.

The first is to have an open-mind to the treatment. If you’re not open minded it won’t work. In fact if you’re not open minded to hypnosis you probably won’t even try it.

The second thing you need is to believe that it will work or at least suspend your disbelief that it won’t work. Studies have actually found that any treatment, whether it is drugs, hypnosis or whatever, will work best if you believe in them.

The more you believe in the ability of hypnosis to help you, the better your chances of success.  One of the reasons I interview clients so closely before they come in to see me is they need to be open and believe that hypnosis can help. If I think they are calling for some other reason, such as to please their spouse, I don’t see them. I don’t like to waste anybody’s time, especially mine.

Using Self Hypnosis Recordings for Stress Reduction

Most people use self hypnosis recordings on MP3 or CD at least a first to guide them though the process.  When using these for stress reduction a good strategy is to try to get away from the hustle and bustle of the day so that you can get into a more relaxed state.

One of the best ways to use self-hypnosis recordings is to bring them with you so you can use them during the day. This way when the day does turn chaotic, you can quickly return to a calming state by listening to a short recording without anyone ever knowing you were treating yourself!

To get the most benefit you want to get rid of any distractions because they’ll just add to your stress. This will allow you to focus on the self hypnosis process. Turn off your radio, your television, and especially your cell phone while you’re going though your self-hypnosis session. Dedicate this time entirely to your well-being.

Using Self Hypnosis Recordings for Weight Reduction

If you’re using self-hypnosis as part of your weight reduction strategy a good time to use your recordings is when you feel weakness in your resolve to exercise or eat more healthily. So if you find that you are a person that reaches for snacks in the afternoon, listen to your recording in the afternoon. If you are more tempted in the evening, listen to them in the evening. It’s also good to listen to them right before you go to sleep at night.

Scheduling Your Self Hypnosis Sessions

At first, as much as possible you will want to schedule your self hypnosis session time just as you would any other appointment. Try to allow yourself 10 to 15 minutes to wind down and relax.

Although many people find it hard to devote a single second to themselves, to shift your thoughts you have to put effort and work on it, just as you would any other learning experience. So make a commitment to dedicate this on your calendar as self development time.

Using Self Hypnosis without a Recording

If you’re not using a recording while you’re in this relaxed state, you will want to give yourself suggestions about how you want to behave then visualize how you want to be after using that behavior. See yourself in a place so relaxing that there is no stress at all or if you’re trying to become fitter see yourself at the weight you want to be at.

You Have to Practice

In order to get good at anything you need to practice. What you’ll find is that, with practice, your subconscious mind will adopt the suggestions you give it. As it does, these suggestions will grow into what’s normal for you. Soon, your new behaviors will have become your habits and you’ll only need to call upon self-hypnosis for a refresher now and then.
