One of the most asked questions I get is, “What’s the difference between Neuro-Linguistic Programming and hypnosis?” Many people believe that Neuro-Linguistic Programming and hypnosis are the same. That’s because both work with the subconscious mind,
While it is true that they are similar in some ways, there are differences. Today, let’s look at the difference between Neuro-Linguistic Programming and hypnosis.
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis has been around for thousands of years. In the past hypnotherapy has been controversial. Today most clinicians agree it is an effective therapeutic technique. It is used for a wide range of conditions including stress and pain relief. It also very effective for dealing with anxiety and mood disorders.
A hypnotherapist uses positive suggestions to guides a subject’s thoughts. These suggestions help them to make certain situations better and solve problems. Hypnotherapists use a procedure designed to relax the subject. This helps them focus their mind to make positive improvements. These include changing their smoking and eating habits.
Hypnosis works almost entirely with the subconscious mind. Hypnosis usually involves being put into a trance by a trained hypnotherapist. Once in a trace, the hypnotherapist helps guide the subject’s unconscious thoughts toward solving their issue.
What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?
Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, combines the use of neurology, language and computer programming.
This combination allows an NLP practitioner to understand how a person’s senses filter and process their experiences before storing them in their mind (neuro). It then gives them insight into how he or she translate this sensory information into words and symbols (linguistic). Finally, it helps them understand how this information becomes attitudes, habits and behavior (programming).
Is there a Difference Between Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Hypnosis?
A major difference between Neuro-Linguistic Programming and hypnosis is NLP works with both the conscious and subconscious areas of the mind. Like hypnosis, NLP works with the subconscious to solve problems. But unlike hypnosis, the person using NLP is completely aware of what they’re doing.
Hypnosis does more trance work. It uses the subconscious to create imagery that helps solve problems. This is often done without the subject’s conscious awareness.
What’s Better – NLP or Hypnosis?
When it comes to NLP and hypnosis, either are effective methods to make positive changes in your life or to correct behavioral problems. Some people do very well using only NLP techniques. Others sometimes react more effectively with hypnosis. But this can change depending on the situation.
Over the years, I’ve found that NLP techniques might work powerfully for one individual and hypnosis for another for the exact same issue. Usually, using both in combination gets the best results.
