“Fear makes the wolf bigger than he is.” – German Proverb
People call my San Diego office quite frequently wanting to know if hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques can help them overcome a fear or phobia of some kind or another.
The answer is a resounding “YES”.
I have used hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques to help people with all types of fears and phobias, from specific fears like driving in San Diego freeway traffic to social phobias that have left them feeling isolated and alone.
If you have a fear or phobia controlling your life imagine how you life would change if you could overcome it once and for all.
What kind of things would you be able to do if you left this fear or phobia behind forever?
What is fear?
According to an online dictionary a fear is “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.”
Fears are natural. Some fears keep you safe.
For example, a fear of rattlesnakes will prevent you from seeing a rattlesnake and trying to go and pet it (unless you belong to some type of snake worshipping cult).
On the other hand, a phobia is defined as “a persistent, extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.”
Phobias are not natural. They do not keep you safe.
Types of Phobias
Some phobias are a fear of something specific such as flying or driving. You can also have a social phobia that causes you to feel anxious in social situations.
Some examples of specific phobias are the fear of Rabbits known as Leporiphobia or the fear of snakes known as Ophidiophobia.
Social phobias would be a fear of giving a speech known as Glossophobia, the fear of meeting new people known as Anthropophobia, the intense fear and anxiety of any place or situation where escape might be difficult also known as Agoraphobia, or even the fear of talking to the boss sometimes known as Bossophobia (I’m not sure if this is a real word).
How Are People Affected by Phobias?
A phobia usually begins in childhood and continues into adulthood. They are fairly common occurrences.
Of Americans over 18, it is estimated that about 19.2 million have some kind of specific phobia, 15 million have some kind of social phobia and 1.8 million have Agoraphobia.
Phobias such as Acrophobia or the fear of heights, if left untreated, can be paralyzing, because it can prevent a person from working on the even the second floor of a building or unable to cross a footbridge over a road.
Social phobias can be disabling preventing a person from being able to meet a possible mate or advance in the workplace.
No matter what the phobia is, if you are being affected by one it can stop you from enjoying any part of your life at all.
Fears and phobias are all housed in your subconscious mind.
Your Subconscious Mind
Your subconscious mind controls your automatic behaviors. These are learned behaviors that psychologists call heuristics or shortcuts.
These shortcuts are the way you automatically behave in certain situations.
For example you don’t think about how to brush your teeth you just grab your toothbrush and brush them.
When you drive you get into your car you take off and then drive to your destination, sometimes without even remembering the drive.
Your subconscious mind has been programmed to do nearly everything you do on a regular basis – automatically. It has stored habitual thought patterns that help you respond to common situations quickly, so you don’t have to think about them.
These types of behaviors are helpful because if you really had to think about many of the things you do automatically during the day you might never get anything done.
A Problem Shortcut
We all have a shortcut called the fight or flight response. What the fight or flight response does is get your body ready to fight or flee in a threatening situation.
This automatic behavior is a result of eons of evolution. It was designed to keep you safe from an attacking saber toothed tiger or a marauding tribe of raiders.
Today your fight or flight gets activated in situations that are not so life threatening. For example, if the fight or flight response gets activated when you go into a close space you respond with heightened anxiety.
If your subconscious mind makes this response into a heuristic you now have Claustrophobia, the persistent fear of being in small spaces.
The problem with this is it happens automatically. It seems like you have no control over how you feel.
Overcoming Fears and Phobias
When combined with hypnotherapy, Neuro Linguistic programming techniques can help you eliminate your fear or phobia quickly and easily.
Developed by John Grinder and Richard Bandler at the University of Santa Cruz in the 1970’s, Neuro Linguistic Programming has been used successfully for decades to help people in overcoming fears in phobias.
People have used modern hypnotherapy for the past 200 years or so. It is one of the most misunderstood therapies in use today.
Today it is used for many types of maladies from overcoming fears and phobias to overcoming addictions like smoking or overeating.
When combined with hypnotherapy, Neuro Linguistic programming techniques help you replace the negative associations that activate your fear response with a positive association that helps to trigger a more useful response.
How Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming Techniques Work in Overcoming Fears and Phobias
Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques work by introducing positive suggestions into your subconscious mind.
While Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques work when you are awake or in a trance state, hypnotherapy induces a deep state of relaxation or trance state so your subconscious mind is receptive to a new perspectives and ideas.
Through this process, positive perspectives and ideas are introduced into your subconscious mind which receives motivational and confidence building statements that help you overcome your fear or phobia.
These new ideas and beliefs help you form healthier beliefs, values and habitual thinking patterns. These shifts in thinking empower you to get past your fear or phobia so you can live a happier and more care free life.
This is how hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques work to help you in overcoming whatever fear or phobia you’re dealing with quickly and easily.
Other Benefits of Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming
Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques can have positive effects on every aspect of your life.
In addition to overcoming your fear or phobia you’ll also receive other additional health benefits. Clients have found that their hypnosis session calms their nerves, their mind and their entire body.
The lingering, calming effects of hypnosis are restorative. They find that the release of stress and alleviation of anxiety doesn’t just happen during the session but lasts for days and sometimes many weeks afterwards.
Also the positive ideas and perspectives you receive during your session build your self esteem and boost your confidence. This can help in your personal and professional life.
This is safe, gentle and positive process that can be safely used by nearly anyone to enhance almost any aspect of their life.
